I took him to the eye doctor today and was shocked at the results. He's almost blind in his left eye. He is far sighted and has an astigmatism. The big blow is that he has amblyopia as well. It is so bad that his left side of the brain doesn't even try to see and has completely shut off use of that eye. The technical machinery spit out a lens strength that was 'supposed' to help him but when the doctor tried all the different strengths on him NOTHING made it better. My poor little boy - why didn't I catch this sooner. He has to get a referral to a pediatric opthamologist and hopefully they will say that treatment is possible. If so he will need glasses and an eye patch. An eye patch !!!!!!!!! What will that do to his little social life. Will he be class freak? I feel so horrible and I just wish I could make him all better.
His dad and I are divorced, and although Orion is here, I just feel so alone. Orion just doesn't seem to fully understand how horrible this situation is to me. No matter how good of a step dad he is it really does make a difference when it comes to things like this. Or maybe men just don't freak out as much as mommy's. I don't know....
My little Noah looks so perfect. I never imagined this nightmare for him.

We have had time to deal with this. He has been wearing his patch daily for 2 weeks and he just got his glasses!! I didn't think it was possible for Noah to get any cuter but these damn glasses are just too freaking adorable on him! They make his eye magnified & it is just absolutely adorable! Thanks for all the kind words. They really meant a lot & have helped me through this. Noah is a tough cookie & we are making the best of it. *UPDATE 5/31/2008*
I tried to send a message, but I don't know if it went through. When my son needed an eye patch he wouldn't leave it alone. It also caused some skin irritation around the adhiesive. Instead, I switched to eye drops. It dialates the good eye, forcing his brain to use the "bad" eye. If he doesn't want the eye patch, I would ask for the drops. Keep in mind though that it will make him sensitive to light. I opted for the transition glasses so we wouldn't have to worry about an extra pair of sun-glasses. They do say that the older the child, the less chance of correcting with patches. Although, my sister also had it and it wasn't caught untill she was about 11 or so. She did some eye exercises to help out and it made a difference. My son's left eye was awfull. He can see out of it now, but still wears a pretty hefty perscription. I wouldn't give up hope just yet. What ever you do, stick with the program and don't let him cop out of it. The longer he works with the eye training, the better it will work for him.
Best of luck
It's so hard to see the lil ones go through trouble like this, my son has blisters in his mouth right now and dr said there is nothing to treat it, it's a virus that comes and goes after about 10 days, my husband is my son's father and he doesn't freak out nearly like i do...i think it's just a man thing....it makes me wonder how he doesnt care but then when we really talk i see he does care...more than i know....Just thought i would share.
He is just precious anyway you put it. I am sure being the youngest of 3 boys he is a tough cookie too. (I have 3 boys too so just assuming based on experience here) I am glad you caught it while he was this young. What made you take him? Were there any symptoms? Just wondering; my 5 year old squints a lot and he had less than perfect vision in one eye but they weren't quite sure what he was truly cognitive about in the eye exam. It was a year ago and he wouldn't really cooperate.
Hugs to you. I know as a mom this is harder on us. BTW, I enjoy your photos and would love to be included in some of the challenges you ladies set up.

Your son is precious. I'm sure Orion is just trying to be strong for you and not lose it.
