A lot of celebrity relationships can be emotional roller coasters, but boy is that ever true when it comes to the breakup between actress Kristin Cavallari and former NFL player Jay Cutler. Since announcing their divorce in April 2020, the drama has been nonstop — and lately, it seems to be at a near constant. For those following along, it can definitely be difficult to see where these two stand.
Sure, together or not, they'll have to be in each other's lives to co-parent their kids, Camden, Jaxon, and Saylor, but what about beyond that? What's actually going on here? At first, it just seemed like these two were better off living separate lives, but now that other people have started to get involved, the situation just keeps getting more and more confusing.

Their Divorce Announcement
In April 2020, Kristin took to Instagram to announce that she and Jay were getting divorced.
"With great sadness, after 10 years together we have come to a loving conclusion to get a divorce," she wrote. "We have nothing but love and respect for one another and are deeply grateful for the years shared, memories made, and the children we are so proud of. This is just the situation of two people growing apart. We ask everyone to respect our privacy as we navigate this difficult time within our family."
Everything Seemed Normal for a While
Though there was obviously plenty of speculation among fans about what went wrong behind the scenes (especially since news of Very Cavallari's cancelation wasn't far behind), both Kristin and Jay seemed to be getting on with their lives as we'd expect any couple moving on from their marriage would. But then, all hell broke loose.
Kristin Was Rumored To Be Dating Austen Kroll
Reports surfaced that Kristin was dating Southern Charm star Austen Kroll, but he told Us Weekly in November 2020 that they were just friends. According to him, Kristin joined her friend Justin Anderson on a trip to Charleston in October, they all got together, and everyone hit it off.
“We’ve all been in contact ever since," he said. "We’re in this, like, big old group chat, and the group chat is active. We had a blast with them and I’m gonna take a trip to see them in Nashville sometime soon.”
There's only one problem: Austen also happens to be Madison LeCroy's ex.

It didn't take long for rumors to surface that Madison was dating Jay while Kristin was supposedly dating her Madison's ex, Austen, and she hinted that the rumors might be true during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live in early January 2021.
"I'm not kissing and telling," was all that she would say at the time, but still — that pretty much confirmed that something was going on.

Later in January, Madison took to Instagram Live to share her comments on the situation with Jay, Austen, and Kristin. According to BuzzFeed, she hinted that Jay was relieved to be broken up with Kristin, and Madison wasn't impressed with the way that she was dancing with Austen, either.

On January 22, Kristin and Jay shared identical photos together on Instagram, which definitely threw fans for a loop. "The world is full of users. 10 years. Can't break that," the caption on the pic said.
Some fans believed this meant that the couple might be getting back together, but to others, it immediately seemed obvious that this was a dig at Madison and her recent comments aimed at them. Hmm …
Madison Reacts
Madison didn't try to hide her reaction to Jay and Kristin's photo together. At first, she commented on Jay's post, saying that she told him it would all work out — and then later, when Lindsay Hubbard, a fellow Bravo star, commented that she was confused, Madison replied, "Call me sis and I'll tell you," adding, "Can't wait to clear this up."

It didn't take long for Madison to take to her Instagram Story, sharing screenshots of a text conversation she had with Jay (via OK! Magazine), where he told her that he was flying to Charleston to spend time with her. Obviously, at this point, they were close enough that he'd actually get on a plane to see her — interesting.

Madison followed up her post with even more screenshots of her text message conversation with Jay. This time, she was showing proof that Jay was mad at her of dropping his name, but clearly, Madison was upset at the fact that he was suddenly acting like nothing had ever been going on between them.

As even further proof that Jay and Madison had been spending time together, she posted a selfie that they had taken during a visit.
"Jay reached out to Madison and they spent time together," a source told People of their relationship. "She flew out to see him after filming the Southern Charm reunion last month."
Justin Weighs In
Justin Anderson, who was also hanging out with Kristin and Austen, took to Instagram to share his take on the situation, even accusing Madison of lying. Replying to comments, he wrote, reports People, "I'm talking about Madison using Kristin and Jay to try and get people's attention. It was never going work."
"If everyone stops saying Madison's name … she'll stop making stuff up for attention," he added.
Madison Is Unbothered
Madison seemingly responded to all of the drama with this photo of herself lounging in a black swimsuit with a drink in her hand, writing in her caption, "Blocking more than the ☀." Some fans took this to mean that she was blocking Jay and Kristin on social media, but at the very least, she was trying to prove she was unbothered by the whole thing.
Andy Cohen Exposed Jay's DMs
While filming the Southern Charm reunion, host Andy Cohen asked Madison if he could see her phone and look at the DMs that Jay had sent her.
"This is Jay Cutler asking what the top three restaurants in Charleston is," Andy said as he looked at her DMs. "She said, 'Are you asking this because your ex sent the same DM to my ex?' So he said, 'Haha did she? I don't keep up with her.' And then she recommends a restaurant. She said, 'I'll guess we'll have to test more out.'"
Sounds like Madison might have been telling the truth after all …
How Kristin Feels
So how is Kristin coping with all of this drama? According to what a source close to the situation told Us Weekly, she's not letting it get to her, especially because she's reportedly not spending a lot of time on social media and instead focused on her business and her kids.
“All of what Madison is saying and putting out there is just noise to Kristin,” the insider said. “Kristin is unbothered by what is being said about her — it just doesn’t affect her in any way, to be honest.”
Where They Stand Today
As of early February, Kristin and Jay have yet to address the situation directly themselves, but so far, there's no evidence that it's breaking the peace that now exists between them. As far as we can tell, both of them are currently single, but who knows? Maybe they'll each find a new love this year — and maybe all this drama will officially die down.
