Amid the numerous and ongoing demonstrations in Los Angeles in response to federal deportation raids and against ICE, a woman who was nine months pregnant was reportedly arrested by federal agents who detained her undocumented husband. According to HuffPost, the woman, whose name is Cary Lopez, was a week away from her due date when she was forcibly detained, despite being a United States citizen.
Lopez was later taken to a hospital. After clips of her husband’s detainment and their incident with federal agents went viral, social media users left comments on various platforms, some of them in support of Lopez and others against her actions in allegedly preventing law enforcement from doing their job. At least, according to some people.
Cary Lopez was a week away from her due date when she was detained.
NBC Los Angeles reported that Lopez recorded agents as they tried to detain her husband at his place of employment. In footage that was shared with the news outlet, Lopez tells agents they are on private property. They try to move her from the truck she stands in front of, where her husband sits. Eventually, according to NBC Los Angeles, the agents forcibly move Lopez and detain her as well, even though she is a US citizen.
“I was blocking the doors because they were trying to forcibly open them, but I told them they were on private property,” Lopez told NBC Los Angeles after she was released from ICE custody. She explained how she felt sharp pains afterward, potentially as a result of the way she was physically handled during her detainment.
“I had lost my balance because he was kind of shoving me away from the door,” she said, per the news outlet. “That’s when I kind of leaned forward, trying to protect the stomach.” She was reportedly watched closely by health care officials following the incident.

Cary Lopez faced support and criticism following her husband’s detainment.
After NBC News shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) about the incident involving the pregnant US citizen and her husband, people left comments to show their support or criticism of Lopez.
“She made choices & now she has to deal with the results,” one person commented. “Just a note. She’s probably receiving Medicaid & her baby will be deemed an American just because it was born here.”
Another person commented, “That’s so scary. Hope she’s getting the care and support she truly needs right now.”
“I am curious. How many right now could prove to ICE that they are US citizens, if they were stopped?” someone else wrote in response to the story. “Some carry Real ID drivers licenses, but not everyone, and few Americans carry their passports while in the US. So how would you stop from being arrested? A note from your Mom?”
Protests continue throughout Los Angeles as citizens rally against the numerous ICE raids in and around the city. Other cities across the country have joined in on demonstrations. Hundreds have also laid out plans to participate in the collective “No Kings” protest scheduled for June 14, Donald Trump’s birthday.
