A dad has gone viral for failing to notice that the baby he was holding was not his own. The baby’s mom orchestrated the baby swap as a prank to see if her husband would realize she had handed him someone else’s child. Turns out, he did not pass the test, and some people joked that he might end up picking up the wrong kid from day care one day.
The mom handed him the baby while he was cooking. In a video of the prank shared on TikTok by @mariahmiller95, the dad was grilling when his wife handed him their friend’s baby instead of their own. He took the baby and held her as he manned the grill, clearly focused on the food he was preparing.
At one point, he looked directly at the child and still didn’t notice anything was amiss. He encouraged her to say “hi,” and seemed slightly confused when she didn’t. Still, he didn’t recognize that the baby wasn’t his.
He only noticed when he saw his actual child.
Later in the video, the dad was introduced to the friend’s baby (who was actually his baby). Only then did he seem to realize that the “friend’s baby” looked a lot like his child, prompting him to do a double take. Suddenly it hit him that the child he’d been holding wasn’t his. “That’s not mine,” he eventually concluded, pointing at the baby.
The whole incident made him feel like a “dirtbag father.”
The mom shared a photo of the two babies side by side.

In the photo, the babies did look similar — and some people defended the dad for that reason. “In all fairness he was distracted and they do look a lot alike!!” one TikTok user commented on the baby swap video. But others didn’t think it was an excuse.
One person pointed out that the dad “looked her straight in the face and didn’t recognize her.”
Another TikTok user wrote, “I’d actually go insane if my husband failed this bad.”
Some people found it hilarious.
A few people made jokes about how the dad shouldn’t be the one to pick up their child from day care. “He’s the dad that would pick up the wrong kid at daycare,” one person commented. “Omg that was hilarious.”
Several others joked that the other baby seemed to be in on the prank. Though a stranger was holding her, she was “just chilling” and not crying at all. “Somebody pay that baby.. she nailed her role,” someone joked.
But others thought it was a serious offense and no laughing matter. “A dad not recognizing his own child even when holding them and looking to their face? Yeah that’s not funny,” one person concluded.
