Before President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump returned to the United States, Melania had a joint engagement with Kate Middleton on the final day of their state visit. At Windsor Castle’s Frogmore Gardens, Kate and Melania met Chief Scout Dwayne Fields and members of the Scouts’ Squirrels program. The Princess of Wales is a co-president of the Scout Association.
The children Kate and Melania spent time with that day were between the ages of 4 and 6. Speaking exclusively to People, Fields praised both women for how they interacted with the children. “They gave so much of themselves,” he told the publication. “It is easy for the young people to be overwhelmed, but they were settled and calm and enjoyed the day.”
The kids were focused on earning their “Go Wild” badges by learning more about nature through various outdoor activities, including building bug hotels and painting leaves. They were also told they were going to have an opportunity to meet the princess — though they didn’t exactly understand what that meant.
Fields told People that one of the kids asked Melania if she’s going to be a princess in the future. “One of the young asked Mrs. Trump: ‘Are you the next princess?’ That gives an idea of how little they knew about the situation,” he said.

In addition to praising Kate for how she connected with the children, Fields told the publication that Melania “was engaging” and “asked lots of questions.” The way she acted made the kids eager to interact with her, he said.
“When she was speaking with the young people, there was lots of eye contact and lots of questions about them and how they were doing,” he explained. “It was very inviting to the young people, and they were receptive to it and responded really well.”
The joint outing was a first for Kate and Melania. Kate and her husband, Prince William, were also responsible for greeting the president and first lady when they first arrived on the grounds of Windsor Castle. During the state visit, the Trumps reportedly had a “warm and friendly” private meeting with the Prince and Princess of Wales, People reported. They were, of course, present for the state banquet as well. During the lavish dinner, the president sat beside Kate.
