Kate Middleton and Prince William first started dating around 2002, which means that she’s known her brother-in-law Prince Harry since he was 18 years old. That’s a really, really long time, and those who have been following along with the royals for years know that he and Kate were once very close (before Meghan Markle came along, anyway).
But was there ever a point when they were too close? That’s what some people seem to think after an old video of Kate and Harry went viral on social media, leading some to believe that Kate was being “inappropriate” towards her husband’s younger brother.
The video was originally taken in 2016.

William, Kate, and Harry were together at an event for their mental health initiative, Heads Together, and the short clip shows Kate looking at Harry and licking her lips.
Of course, when this moment is isolated, it’s easy to see how some people are interpreting it as a flirty look… but in a larger context, it may not have been a big deal at all. However, the OP seems pretty convinced that it is — and that it could be one of the reasons that Kate and Meghan never got along.

The footage has some people calling out Kate for her behavior.
A lot of people are in agreement that Kate wasn’t acting appropriately toward Harry — especially with William right there next to them.

Another wrote, “She was in love with him the whole time that’s why she wanted him to stay single his whole life and follow her and William.”
It’s no secret that Kate and Harry were very close.
Before Harry’s wedding to Meghan (and his eventual decision to leave the royal family behind), Kate and Harry were always said to be very close. In September 2025, former royal butler Grant Harrold told Us Weekly that at one point, he thought they might even date.
“They got on so well,” he said. “I remember, when [William and Kate] separated — and I think I said this — you know, [Harry and Kate] got on so well that even I thought that maybe Harry and her would get together.”
He added, “They were that close. They were best friends, and I wouldn’t have put it past Harry thinking, ‘Well, she’s a pretty girl. My brother didn’t want her. I’ll have her.’ That wouldn’t have surprised me at all. So it could have been Harry and Catherine easily, I would have thought. But, you know, thankfully [William] got her back.”
