Broadway Star Complains About Not Being Recognized on a Flight & Gets Dragged

Sometimes we have to step back and ask ourselves if the very concept of celebrity culture has gone too far. One thing that we do appreciate about celebrities is when they can poke fun at themselves. Renowned Broadway actress, Laura Benanti, is getting dragged on social media after she posted a video of herself on a flight in utter disbelief when she was surrounded by a teenagers traveling in a theater group and not a single one recognized her. This begs the question if it’s expecting too much to seek a little appreciation from your peers or was this video chock-full of sarcasm and no one can take a joke? You decide!

Broadway star, Laura Benanti, shares a video on social media that’s pretty much the opposite of a humble brag.

Sometimes you really can’t help but feel for celebrities who just aren’t getting the attention they’re obviously craving.

Laura Benanti, who you might recognize from television shows like Yellowstone and Gossip Girl, and if you’re someone who loves to visit New York City and check out a few Broadway shows, you would likely recognize the Tony Award winning actress from shows like Gypsy and She Loves Me, is someone who has not been shy on social media over the years.

Looking like she was either trying to be super undercover or extremely comfy for a long plane ride, she shared a video on social media from a flight where she stated she was traveling with “about 83%” of the passengers were teenagers from a theater group.

She remarked with a smirk that “not a single one” from the group recognized her, which she just couldn’t “tolerate.” She decided to ask the group if they were in fact all in a theater group, which they confirmed.

When she told them that she did theater too, Laura couldn’t help but share that a young man in a beret with his jacket draped over his shoulders — she’s pretty good at setting the scene, because he sounds effortlessly cool looking — told her, “Cool.”

After sharing that this young man or anyone else nearby did not take one tiny nibble of her bait, she ended the video by saying, “RIP.”

Laura was immediately dragged on social media by individuals who are simply not into the ego and vanity of it all.

Perhaps some people couldn’t really decipher things because she’s an actress who has been doing her thing on Broadway and television for many years, but there were some folks who did not take kindly to this kind of social media share.

There were a few people in the comments who couldn’t help but speak up. One person commented, “Top Broadway actors exist in a tiny bubble in which they are huge celebrities. But that bubble bursts the second they cross the Hudson.” Meaning, you can be one of the biggest Broadway actors to hit the stage, but since it’s such a niche platform that not everyone is privy to, there are a lot of talented actors in that world that you likely wouldn’t recognize going about your day-to-day life.

One person in the comment section on X didn’t mince words when they said, “Well, I have no clue who she is either. Nor do I care. She needs to get over her main character syndrome.” Well, that’s not a very nice thing to say.

There was a standout comment absolutely overflowing with sarcasm that you kind of can’t help but chuckle at when reading it. The person said, “Truly one of the greatest tragedies of our time. Thoughts and prayers to Laura Benanti, who somehow survived an entire flight without a single stranger validating her existence. We must do better as a society.” Okay, this person may be a little too good at mockery!

Laura then posted a video response after the negative uproar to clarify that she’s well aware that “nobody cares” about her.

Giving social media a little update while on an airplane in the same incognito baseball cap and jacket, Laura decided she needed to clarify some things to the “meanies” in the comment section.

She starts out by saying that she can see that her initial video made people “very mad,” but that wasn’t at all her intention. She just wanted to tell people that in her first video, she was simply making fun of herself, not the group of theater kids that she was flying with that day. She explains that she truly didn’t expect those kids to know her and even goes so far to call the one teen who spoke to her an “icon.”

Laura goes on to state that she’s well aware that “nobody cares about [her],” as she’s even acted in a show called Laura Benanti: Nobody Cares. She thought this type of video would go out to her “niche theater community,” and she really didn’t expect the backlash and harsh comments.

Well, there you go. If anything, this type of video shows that just about anything can end up on the “bad side of the internet,” which is exactly what Laura was likely hoping to avoid!
