What to Know
There isn’t much Josh Duggar could do anymore to surprise those who continue to follow the former 19 Kids and Counting star and his family, both immediate and extended. But when some of his prison emails on Reddit to wife Anna Duggar showed him acting so risqué that he refers to her breasts as “the twins,” well, he basically proved that he can still surprise us all. In the emails, which are from 2022 before Josh was transferred to a federal prison to serve out his 151-month sentence, Josh repeatedly compliments Anna’s cleavage and talks about “the twins” in a way that is so painfully early 2000s.
It’s jarring enough to hear (or read) any man saying this to his wife. But for a Duggar, who followed the Christian organization Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP) his entire life, it’s even more shocking. What Josh says to Anna, and the clothes he mentions, are far from the modest and Godly things he grew up with. And yes, it’s also all pretty cringe.
The racy emails are not what you’d expect from a God-fearing Duggar.
The Duggars always presented the family as dedicated to God in a way that values modesty, leaves kissing for marriage and hand holding for engagements, relies on side hugs for affection for people in courtships, and plenty of other so-called rules. The modesty rules always include skirts below the knees for girls and women, modesty panels on low-cut shirts, and bathing suits? Forget about anything that appears too worldly.
But Josh’s emails to Anna show a totally different side of things. He wrote to her about seeing photos of her wearing “shorty shorts” and sending “crossed and uncrossed” photos of her legs. Again, these details do not exactly scream ‘God-fearing couple knee-deep in IBLP and fundamental Christianity.’
Then, there are the lines about “the twins” (gag).
“I can’t wait to be back with the twins,” Josh wrote at one point. “I miss you! Home for me is lying on your chest.”
In another, he wrote, “Thank you for the pool pics! The twins look happy and healthy — and sun-kissed too! I can’t wait to see them again!”
Josh Duggar also asked Anna about a “non-IBLP” bathing suit.
At another point in the emails Josh sent to Anna at that time, he wrote to her about the teo of them laughing over her “conservative swimwear” on their honeymoon. Which also begs the question, if they thought it was so funny at the time, how much were they truly following behind closed doors? If the emails are any indication of their marriage, it was rooted far more in physical connections than any religion they spoke about on reality TV.
In one email, Josh also suggests that Anna look into “non-IBLP swimwear,” presumably to send him pictures of herself wearing it.
On Reddit, someone commented, “Some of these are from a few days after his sentencing…and he’s most worried about seeing her in non-IBLP swimwear? I’m no psychologist but there is no way this isn’t sex addiction right?”
Another person wrote, “Sex and Jesus. It’s truly bizarre how often and easily he switches from ranting about god to talking about sex. I know it’s the result of his repressed upbringing, but it’s truly wild. All while never asking after his SEVEN children.”
Their emails to each other are full of surprisingly sexual comments.

In one of the emails, Josh even seems to urge Anna to use his letters to her to pleasure herself. Even those outside of religion can guess that this would be a no-no for IBLP conservatives, but alright.
“Snuggle up and read,” Jodo wrote. “And go to that place in your heart/mind to enjoy it! I love you! Enjoy it and let it make it flow.” Just for good measure, he added, “I’d do so if I were there!”
A Redditor commented, in reference to this bit, “This feels like another massive ‘scandal,’ completely unto itself, not just a side effect of Joe’s behavior…I feel gross and upset that he — he of all people — talks this way and that Anna just…goes with it? Encourages it?”
