What to Know
For long-time fans or followers of the Duggar family, there are some things about the 19 Kids and Counting stars that everyone knows about: why they call Josh Duggar “Pest,” what the buddy system is, and, of course, Michelle Duggar‘s voice. And now, someone pointed out in a Reddit post about Anna Duggar, Josh’s wife has the same voice, including the cadence and expressions.
Is that intentional? Or did Anna just gradually pick up the same voice and mannerisms over time? I mean, both can technically be true. And it has to be said that those in the Duggars’ fundamental Christian faith and the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP) tend to sound like Michelle too. It just so happens that Anna also married her oldest son, so there’s that.

Maybe, Michelle and her soft-spoken manner are what drew you into 19 Kids and Counting once upon a time. Before the Duggars graced the screen on TLC, there really wasn’t a reality TV mom quite like her. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t imagine what it was like having Michelle as a mother, if only for a fleeting second. Don’t worry, I don’t think I have it in me to be another Jessa Blessa or Jilly Muffin.
But Michelle’s voice is likely a product of being submissive to him and Jim Bob Duggar and keeping sweet, so to speak. In the Hulu docuseries Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets, cousin Amy Duggar says that Michelle’s voice is intentional and that she uses that semi-iconic baby voice in order to appear more meek and submissive.

In the Reddit post, someone shared an old clip from Counting On. In the clip, Anna talks about Josh cheating on her and how she leaned on her faith. But the big takeaway for many is how Anna sounds and the breathy and soft-spoken voice she uses. Again, it mirrors Michelle’s so closely that it’s like she watched her mother-in-law for years to slowly morph into her.
“Her manner of speaking is sooooo much like Michelle’s. It’s creepy,” one user commented on the Reddit post.
Another responded, “Yeah, the raised eyebrows, widened eyes, slow cadence.”
Someone else commented to share their insight into why both Michelle and Anna speak with such animated expressions. They wrote, “Raised eyebrows & upward inflection could be looking for affirmation from the listener. Fundy women aren’t used to speaking to non-womenfolk in more than a single sentence. And even then look to their headship for signs of irritation. Watch Michelle keep checking in with Jim Bob.”
A Redditor added that Anna’s voice and expressions are “that fully dissociated sound and appearance.”
And Anna isn’t the only one who has a voice that emulates Michelle’s. Kendra Duggar, who married Michelle’s son Joseph Duggar, is heard speaking in the same soft, controlled voice during episodes of Counting On. And even Jinger Duggar has a soft tone most of the time when she speaks, though it’s nothing compared to Michelle and Anna’s voices.
Apparently, Anna wasn’t always like that.

According to another Reddit thread, someone close to Anna and her family alleged that Anna was once more outgoing. There are even social media posts that compare the light leaving Anna’s eyes before and after her wedding night with Josh. Of course, that’s more speculation than. Anything but, per the Reddit post, the alleged insider was confirmed to have close personal knowledge of Anna.
When someone asked about Anna’s personality, the user responded, “She used to be really sassy and funny and outgoing.”
They then elaborated, “She always got in trouble for talking back and being too loud/having too much fun.”
The user also speculated, “I have zero doubts she was brainwashed into believing she has no options and this is the life she has to live. However, as a mother, she is now complicit in compromising her children’s safety.”
