What to Know
It’s not some huge secret that the economy in the United States isn’t great. But when former Teen Mom star Kailyn Lowry took note of the costs at a personal level, she realized just how tough it is for normies like us. She posted a TikTok where she explains that she bought just a few items from her local Family Dollar and that she was shocked at the total on her receipt.
She says in the video that it sounds like a lot to her, and she is well aware of the fact that she is wealthier than some of the average income or low income people who listen to her podcast. So for Kailyn, it’s a matter of wondering how the heck people are affording literally anything right now, if the cost of medication at a dollar store is any indication of what people are up against.
Her receipt is ridiculous for the dollar store.

Kailyn says in her video that she bought six items at Family Dollar, and that they are all personal hygiene or medicine of some kind. She also says that she ran out of these items and needed to pick them up as soon as possible. She then reveals that, for things like Claritin and Children’s Claritin and some other items, her total came to $52.50.
“You guys I’m so sad I don’t understand how middle class and below even low income households are surviving right now,” Kailyn says in the video. She goes on to add, “I’m pissed off for the general population because this is f–ked. You can’t use food stamps on personal hygiene products so what are people doing in this economy in today’s society?”
She doesn’t understand how average families are surviving.
Some of the other items that Kailyn bought were deodorant and razors, but nothing that is a top tier brand. So for the total of six items at a dollar store to be so expensive, it was just a wild concept for Kailyn. Sure, she could have purchased store brand medicine or off-brand items, but again, what she bought was not extravagant. Yet, the total price seemed to reflect otherwise.
“I cannot imagine what other people who don’t have that kind of money are doing and I’m so sorry,” Kailyn says. “And I don’t know if we’re all gonna be on Extreme Couponers or what the f–k we’re gonna do next, but this is insane. $52.50 [at] Family Dollar for six items.”
“We’re not surviving,” one user commented on the TikTok. “We are literally living paycheck to paycheck and hoping that we have money to buy things like deodorant or razors.”
Another user wrote, “Middle class and with no assistance from the government because we ‘make too much.’ Healthcare is like over $1K a month for JUST my husband…..we have 3 kids.”
For some, it’s not even a matter of not making a decent amount of money. It is now about not making enough to keep up with inflation at every turn.
“And we gotta decide between pay a bill, rent or groceries,” someone else commented.
And when one person wrote that the “inflation rate is insanity,” Kailyn replied, “Sky high.”
People explained how they’re dealing with the economic crisis.
As for how some people are dealing with economic issues? Well, they aren’t. For some, there is no way out, no way through, and no real end in sight. So they are dealing with whatever they can while they can.
One person wrote under Kailyn’s video, “We’re not surviving, we’re going deeper & deeper into debt.”
Another added, in the same vein, “We aren’t surviving! We are picking which bill can be paid this week and waiting until the last day to pay bills, going without so we can feed our kids, maxing out credit cards so we can go to work to do it all over again.”
