‘A Toxic Love Story’ Starts as a Stalker Story — and Then Gets Stranger
If you haven’t watched A Toxic Love Story, turn on Netflix and spend the next 90 minutes getting to know Ian Diaz, his wife Angela Diaz, and his ex-girlfriend, Michelle Hadley. Ian Diaz and Michelle Hadley moved into a condo together in Anaheim, California, not long after getting engaged.
According to Hadley, when they moved in, Ian Diaz changed and wanted her to change. For a while, she played along, but Ian Diaz allegedly became manipulative and abusive, and Hadley had enough. She moved out, and Ian Diaz soon got involved with another woman.
In a matter of months, he married Angela Diaz and was expecting twins. At least that’s what they wanted people to believe.
The First Twist: Angela Faked a Pregnancy to Frame Her Husband’s Ex
Ian and Angela Diaz contact police claiming Hadley created a fake email account and called herself “Lilithistruth.” She allegedly threatened to harm Angela Diaz and her unborn twins. At one point, the Diazes claim Hadley, posing as Angela Diaz, hired a man to come to their home and rape her in a “consensual rape fantasy.”
Angela Diaz told the world she was expecting twins, and Hadley reportedly threatened the lives of both the mother and unborn babies. We soon learn the pregnancy was a total lie.
The Second Twist: Angela Had Faked Cancer Too
Angela Diaz allegedly faked cancer, too. This woman is like a combination of Scamanda’s Amanda Reilly and Taylor Parker from Maternal Instinct. We see clips of Diaz, who allegedly had cervical cancer, and interviews with the people she duped.
A friend went so far as to cut her hair in solidarity with Angela Diaz before realizing the cancer patient never cut her hair at all. Instead, she wore hats and tucked her hair up into the back to hide it.
When her boyfriend found photos she’d posted from her chemotherapy sessions were stolen, that was the end. Angela Diaz’s loved ones even planned an intervention to let her know they were all in on her lies, and she continued to pretend that it was all true.
The Third Twist: The Husband Engineered the Whole Thing
When the documentary begins, we are led to believe that Hadley is a crazed ex-lover out to hurt Angela Diaz out of extreme jealousy. The Diazes carefully crafted a catfishing scheme that nearly ruined Hadley’s life.
As time goes on, the bombshells begin to drop, and we start to learn the truth about Angela Diaz and her husband. Through police bodycam footage, it’s evident that Ian Diaz is the one who wants to take Hadley down.
He coaches Angela Diaz on what to say to police, positions himself as a trusted member of law enforcement, and paints his ex as a bloodthirsty lunatic. Police ultimately arrested Hadley, who spent nearly three months in jail on a $1 million bond for crimes she didn’t commit. Hadley later successfully sued the Anaheim Police Department for an undisclosed amount.
Investigators get hip to his game, and both Ian and Angela Diaz found themselves in prison. This is a must-watch documentary that will leave you wondering why anyone would go to such lengths to ruin someone else’s life.
