Former ‘American Idol’ Contestant Sobs in Court as His Daughters Describe What His Crime Took From Them

In 2013, Caleb Flynn had aspirations of a career in show business. He auditioned for American Idol and even made it to the audition before Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson, and Nicki Minaj, but that was the end of his Idol journey. Thirteen years later, a court convicted Flynn of fatally shooting his wife, Ashley Flynn, in the head as she slept. On October 5, 2026, a judge sentenced Flynn to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

During his sentencing, his wife’s parents, Todd Smith and Jill Smith, read letters from Caleb and Ashley’s daughters, 10-year-old Ava and 12-year-old Alyssa. The 40-year-old father sobbed in the courtroom as he listened to the words of two innocent children who lost both of their parents because of his actions.

Flynn’s girls didn’t hold back.

Although the girls are young, they put together very poignant messages for their father, per CNN. Flynn, who worked as a pastor, reportedly had an affair with Alleigha Botner, who worked as an intern at the church. His daughter Ava asked Flynn what her mother did that was so terrible.

“Mommy was the perfect person, the absolute perfect person. What did she ever do to make you hate her so much?” She wrote.

The 10-year-old added that she wished her father could go back and change what happened to her mother.

“It was your choice to leave your only two daughters. It was your choice to hide everything from everyone, and it was your choice to kill the only mother I’ve ever had,” she said.

Alyssa shared just how much she disliked Botner.

“Ashley Flynn was the best thing that ever happened to you. You had the best life ever, and you decided to throw it away for a girl who was half your age,” Alyssa wrote to her father.

The 12-year-old brought her father’s holier-than-thou image to the forefront.

“How could you stand in that church and sing about how much you love God when you knew all the secrets you had inside?”

Flynn maintains his innocence, but Alyssa doesn’t buy it. She wants her father to come clean about his crime.

“I wish that you could come to understand that actions have consequences and you have a lot to pay,” Alyssa said. “The least you could do is tell everyone you did it and receive your outcome.”

Flynn’s actions angered many people.

Video of Flynn from the courtroom posted to a Reddit thread stirred up plenty of emotion. Flynn essentially ruined multiple lives for sex.

“This is such a sad case, man. His wife lost her life, his kids lost both parents, his mistress lost whatever lifestyle he was providing her that kept her around, and he lost everything. Nobody came out of this ahead all because he couldn’t grow a pair and file a divorce, but decided to murder his wife instead,” someone wrote.

“His tears are not real he is only crying for himself. You know you f—-d up when your own kids are reading victim statements to their father,” another comment reads. “That is what he is crying about not the fact that everyone who loved his wife now want nothing to do with him. He will spend his life in prison unloved.”

Alyssa Flynn’s statement had a mic-drop moment that will likely haunt her father forever.

“Through all of what you put me through, God is gonna work something out for good,” she wrote. “And by the way, I don’t plan on coming to see you.”
