What to Know
Some of Shane Gillis’ particular brand of humor might work on his Netflix show Tires, which seems to be in a snow globe of early 2000s humor, but when it comes to Saturday Night Live, that’s not going to fly. He hosted the show for the third time in October 2026 and his monologue was met with far more side eyes than laughter, given what he just had to say about women at the gym.
Mind you, part of his shtick about women at the gym, and their workout clothes, came almost directly from a bit on Tires. But, that aside, people who heard the jokes for the first time were not entertained or amused by what Shane sees as his unavoidable commentary on women who work out and what they wear while exercising in a public space.
Shane Gillis’ ‘SNL’ monologue included some heavily outdated commentary on women in the gym.
Comedian Shane Gillis thinks it’s funny to call women whores. It’s not.

During Shane’s monologue on SNL, he tackled his weight, made jokes about himself, name-dropped Joe Rogan, and called women “whores.” It’s all in a day’s work I guess, but people were not happy about the way he spoke of how women dress at the gym. He described short shorts in neon colors and joked about not being allowed to stare or he would be caught by a hidden camera and posted on TikTok.
“I haven’t been to the gym in so long, I didn’t know women just dress like whores now,” Shane said in his monologue. “Look, I’m sorry, there’s no other way to describe. Have you seen it? I’ve seen it. The shorts. Have you seen the shorts?”
He went on to describe the specific short gym shorts he saw on women in public gyms, and although the audience did share some laughs with him, afterward, users on social media weren’t cheering him on. Whatever the joke was in there, people had a lot to say about Shane’s commentary.
“I’m so sick of women’s clothes being more controversial than men’s behavior,” one person commented under a TikTok clip from the episode.
Someone else wrote, “Is there a laughing prompt somewhere because no way.”
And, another user pointed out, “This weird pearl-clutching puritanical faux scandalization over modern exercise gym clothing is so confusing to me, because women use to wear literal leotard thongs at the gym and men wore hoochi daddy short-shorts and crop tops.”
His jokes were called out as “tasteless.”
Elsewhere on social media, Shane was called out for the jokes that some saw as “tasteless.” In a Reddit thread about his SNL monologue, users agreed that Shane’s humor is giving 2005, and not in a good way. Is there really a good way? Probably not.
“And with everything surrounding the Cornell 7?” Someone commented on the post. “This feels extra tasteless and tone deaf.”
“Yeah wow read the room,” another user agreed. “These guys desperately want it to be 2005 still but being funny without degrading women is too hard for them to figure out.”
Someone also suggested, “I feel like that’s his M.O. He wants to let you know it’s ok to make jokes about uncomfortable subjects because there’s comedy in everything. And it’s corny as hell, not to mention lazy.”
People also didn’t love Shane Gillis’ plug of Joe Rogan as his friend.
In another part of Shane’s monologue during the SNL episode, he mentioned how he can use his friend Joe Rogan’s private gym and sauce at his house in Texas. When he mentioned Joe by name, no one cheered or clapped, and that was not lost on viewers at home. It was another moment that fell flat for Shane, even if some of his fans saw it as comedy.
“Did he think bragging about his friends that everyone hates was a good idea?” A user commented on a TikTok that SNL posted.
Another added a laughing crying emoji and wrote, “The silence when he mentions Rogan.”
