Movies have the ability to transport an audience to another time and place, allowing people to consider the world from another perspective. Halloween encourages people to dress up as someone else for the night. When you combine the two, you are sure to have fun and forget about your worries for a while. Use 2024’s biggest blockbuster hits as inspiration for your costume.
From Inside Out 2 to A Quiet Place: Day One, there were so many good flicks out this year. You can really get creative and celebrate all things cinema by choosing a character from one of them. The 10 ideas on this list are just the tip of the iceberg.
Embarrassment From ‘Inside Out 2’
Pixar’s Inside Out 2 brought audiences back into the mind of Riley Anderson’s mind. She’s 13 now, so some new emotions are introduced. One of these is embarrassment, voiced by Paul Walter Hauser, because when you are a teenager everything is embarrassing. To rock this costume, wear a light magenta hoodie, purple pants, and red sneakers. Paint your face pink and add extra blush. Accessorize with a magenta wig or dye your hair.
Tyler Owens From ‘Twisters’
Yeehaw! Glen Powell played the handsome former rodeo cowboy turned tornado wrangler Tyler Owens in the stand-alone sequel Twisters. Tyler teams up with Kate Carter, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, to research the powerful but deadly weather phenomena. To dress as this brave character, a cowboy hat is mandatory. After that, there is room for creativity. Perhaps you want to recreate the infamous white wet T-shirt scene or maybe a simple plaid button-up will do.

Tashi Duncan From 'Challengers'
This Luca Guadagnino movie could be nicknamed the “sexy tennis” film. It stars Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, Josh O’Connor as Patrick Zweig, and Mike Faist as Art Donaldson in a messy love triangle. To dress as Tashi, wear your coolest tennis gear. Accessorize with a racquet, knee brace, and a fearless attitude. When you get excited at the costume party ,you can yell “Let’s go!” at the top of your lungs.
Harold 'Harold and the Purple Crayon'
This family film is based on the 1955 book of the same name by Crockett Johnson. Zachary Levi plays title character Harold. As a boy, Harold lived in a book, but when the “old man” who narrators his story disappears, he uses his magic purple crayon to go into the real world to find out what happened to him. To dress up as Harold, wear your best purple outfit. Make it a couple or family costume by having others dress up as a moose, a purple crayon, or a porcupine. So many possibilities exist.
Colt Seavers and Jody Moreno from 'Fall Guy'
This comedic action film celebrates the brave men and women who work behind the scenes doing stunts for movies and television. It is loosely based on the 1980s series of the same name. Ryan Gosling stars as veteran stuntman Colt Seavers, and Emily Blunt dazzles as Jody Moreno, a first-time director. The former couple still kind of love each other but things get complicated.
To dress as this power couple, you have options. For Colt, wear a dirty white T-shirt and vest or a yellow suit and beanie. For Jody, wear a pink jumpsuit and straw hat and accessorize with a megaphone or a rose button-up shirt, purple tank top, and pink jeans.
Marshmallow From ‘IF’
John Krasinski’s family-friendly film centers on imaginary friends. One of these is Marshmallow and is voiced by John. The character is based on one of his daughter’s “real life” imaginary friends. The character is named exactly right because it is a literal marshmallow whose head is on fire.
This costume allows so much creativity. The base will be something white, but you can add your own flair to the accessories. Dye your hair or wear a wig for the fire. You can do crazy eye makeup to look like your face is melting after being roasted.
Astrid Deetz From 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice'
This is a sequel 36 years in the making. Beetlejuice is back! Lydia Deetz, played by Winona Ryder, is all grown up and a mother. Her daughter, Astrid Deetz, played by Jenna Ortega, is the Gothic teen these days. To dress as Astrid, find a silky silver Victorian-style dress. You could also opt for a striped sweater dress. Heavy eye liner is also recommended.
Deadpool or Wolverine from 'Deadpool & Wolverine'
This film was the summer blockbuster of 2024. Trying to DIY a costume of the title characters would be pretty hard unless you have amazing cosplay skills. Consider buying a Spirit Halloween version. It’s way less work and then you can spend more time on all the witty banter and one-liners to use at the costume party.
Sam From ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’
This spin-off and prequel film was written and directed by Michael Sarnoski. The plot centers on the first day alien creatures arrived and took over Earth. Lupita Nyong’o plays Sam, a terminally ill woman with cancer, who helps stranger Eric, played by Joseph Quinn, escape Manhattan.
To make your own Sam costume, layer a large cardigan over a grey V-neck shirt. For bottoms, get baggy dark blue sweatpants. Accessorize with beige high-top sneakers, an orange beanie, and an “I Heart NY” tote bag. Don’t forget a black and white stuffed animal cat to represent Frodo.
Garfield From 'The Garfield Movie'
Speaking of cats, this one loves lasagna, his owner Jon Arbuckle, and his beagle best friend Odie. The Garfield Movie is based on the popular comic strip by Jim Davis. To dress up as this title character tabby, wear orange stripes, cat ears, and a tail. Props can include any kind of snack, and be prepared to use sarcasm.
