What to Know
Now that Adam Sandler‘s 17-year-old daughter, Sunny Sandler, is following in her dad’s Hollywood footsteps, she’s getting used to promoting her new projects during TV appearances… and sharing funny stories about the Billy Madison star along the way. Ahead of the release of her new Netflix movie, Don’t Say Good Luck, Sunny revealed why her dad wears socks in the pool, and it’s probably not for the reason you might have guessed.
Sunny and her sister, Sadie, would make fun of their dad when they were kids.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday, Sunny shared a story about something that she and her older sister, Sadie, who is now 20, did as kids: Made fun of their dad relentlessly, of course.
That’s right — even very famous dads aren’t safe from being mocked by their children.
“When me and my sister were younger, we dressed up in his clothes, before that was popular and cool,” she said. “The big shirts, the shorts. We held Diet Cokes and yelled about the air conditioning being off. And then we jumped in the pool with our socks on because he wears his socks in the pool because he can’t bend to take them off on land.”
Adam does take his socks off eventually — after he gets into the pool.
According to Sunny, once her dad has made it into the pool, he can easily remove his socks, and then, the second part of his family’s quirky routine begins.
“Then he’ll drain them, and then you play catch with them,” Sunny said.
Oh, sure. As you do. Of course.
But why can’t Adam bend over to take off his socks before he’s in the water like anybody else would?
His trouble bending over may come from a mobility issue he’s had for a while now.
Over the years, Adam has dealt with physical limitations thanks to his hip, and even had to walk with a cane at one point. In 2022, the actor received a hip replacement, telling Page Six that his wife, Jackie, and their daughters had been helping him tie his shoes since he wasn’t able to do it himself.
“It’s only painful to say out loud,” he said. “I say it was because of basketball so that feels a little bit rugged, but then being unable to tie my own shoe didn’t feel rugged.”
In 2024, Adam credited Sadie and Sunny for making him take his own health more seriously.
“They always look out for me and my health just like I used to with my dad,” he told People at the time. “You go, ‘Man, I want this guy around,’ so I used to scream at my dad to quit smoking, and my kids scream at me to just calm down and try to eat a little more like a normal person.”
