AI-Generated ‘Message From the ’80s’ Has People Calling It Creepy Boomer Propaganda

In some ways, AI can create amazing things that people of today might not otherwise see, but we’d be lying to ourselves if we didn’t admit how dangerous it can also be. Maybe the video shared on X (formerly Twitter) with a “message from the ’80s” isn’t a detriment to anyone, but it is a little creepy. In fact, some users on social media are going as far as to call it boomer propaganda.

Before you come for me because I am calling you a boomer (gasp) for being a kid or a teenager in the ’80s, let’s get it straight. According to Purdue Global, the generation we refer to as “boomers” was born from 1946 to 1964. Gen X-ers were born from 1965 to 1980.

So technically, if you were a teen in the late ’80s, you might just be a boomer. That being said, some people think the ’80s nostalgic video on X is like propaganda for boomers. And, if you think about it, that includes some Gen X-ers too.

The AI-generated ’80s video might be nostalgic, but people aren’t buying it.

A user on X by the name of Brian Roemmele shared a clearly AI-generated video and wrote, “A message from the 1980s: ‘You know the ’80s miss you, right?'” The video features teenagers talking about the good ole days of the ’80s, where they stayed out until the streetlights came on and spoke to each other face to face.

I mean, OK, that might be true. But if you could travel back in time and hand them an Android or iPhone with viral videos on it, they might be as entranced as the rest of us.

After the video was shared on X, people flew to the comments to share their thoughts about the nostalgia of it all. Those who didn’t grow up in the ’80s or even early ’90s were quick to talk about the propaganda of it all, which isn’t totally wrong if you think about it.

Because if you are one to be swayed by nostalgia and music of that time period that goes with it, you might be convinced that the ‘message from the ’80s’ is all the convincing you need to build that time machine.

“This is some of the creepiest. Living in the past. Wishing for youth. Nostalgia, misery bait I’ve seen yet,” someone wrote under the X post. “Jeez this is kind of dark.  It’s not some parallel place that boomers can restore.”

One user commented on the X post with, “Ah yes… Fake memories from a time I didn’t even exist.”

Another wrote, “So the ’80s was all white people? Weird. I don’t remember it like that.”

This is in reference to every AI-generated person in the ’80s video being white, with no one of color at all.

Another user on X pointed this out too. “It’s weird to me that AI never has Black people in it organically,” they wrote.

Others pointed out that most boomers were not born close enough to the ’80s to have grown up during that decade. But, along with many Gen X-ers, some were. And anyway, we all know that boomer is a state of mind and a way to insult anyone who has dated views. So, you know, there’s that.
