Justin Hakuta and Ali Wong's divorce sounds like it's generating enough material that the comedian could do a whole comedy special about it. The mother of two opened up about their split in a new interview that included how her mother responded to the news. Now we know where Ali gets her sense of humor from!
Ali appears on the March 1 cover of The Hollywood Reporter.
The funny lady is set to show off her dramatic chops in her new Netflix series, Beef, where she plays a wife and working mother who ends up tangled in a road rage incident.
Obviously, she drew a bit on her real-life experiences for the role, which led her to dish about her divorce during the interview.
According to Ali, some parts of her divorce are more difficult than others.
Divorcing is almost always complicated, and that was no exception for Ali, whose fame added to the pressures of ending her marriage.
"I did not expect the announcement to be so widespread, but by far the hardest part about getting divorced was my mother's reaction," Ali recalled. "I had told her before that I thought we might get divorced, and she was really upset."
Her mom had just one request about the separation.
Ali's sense of humor must be hereditary, because her mom had a funny way of dealing with the disappointing news.
Ali recalled how her mom looked her in the eye before asking, "Can you just wait until I die?" Ali chided her mom for not allowing her a chance to live her best life before cracking some jokes of her own.
Ali doesn't hold anything against her mother.
Citing her age as a contributing factor, Ali wrote off her mother's request as an off-the-cuff remark.
"She hasn't had her period in 40 years," she quipped. "She's in the sha-ha-hallows of senior citizenship. But it was still really f—ing hard dealing with all her fear of the shame it would bring her."
Things seem to be going well between Ali and Justin despite ending their marriage.
Ali admitted to the interviewer that she had actually come from playing a round of pickleball with her ex before getting ready for the shoot, calling theirs an unusual situation.
"We've been through so much together. It's a very unconventional divorce," she explained.
As far as Hollywood breakups go, this does seem to veer off the beaten path. That being said, if it works for Justin, Ali, and their two daughters (and we guess, Ali's mother), then that's all that really matters!
