Days after Amy Duggar shared that her husband, Dillon King, was facing a medical crisis, she’s opening up about the “extremely rare” condition he’s suffering from. While talking to People this week, Amy revealed that Dillon is experiencing a “severe diaphragmatic rupture” – a traumatic injury that leads to his vital organs shifting dangerously inside his body.
Amy shared last week that Dillon was sick.
When Amy wished Dillon a happy birthday on Instagram last week, she also shared a photo of her husband in a hospital bed, explaining that he was “facing some possible life threatening medical concerns.”
“Today I’d like to ask for some prayers on his behalf. I know God has him, but we welcome the prayers!! I can’t think of a better gift for him!” she wrote at the time. “Dillon we can get through anything together.”
Now, she’s opening up about his diagnosis.
In an interview with People published on Wednesday, Amy revealed that Dillon had been experiencing “continued pain” that led to a scary diagnosis.
“Dillon has been diagnosed with a severe diaphragmatic rupture – an extremely rare and dangerous condition that has caused vital organs, including his kidney and parts of his digestive system, to shift into his chest cavity,” she said.
According to a study shared by the National Library of Medicine, diaphragmatic hernias are most often present at birth and are considered very rare in adults, usually caused by a traumatic injury. Patients often require surgery to repair these ruptures, though they may go undiscovered for months.
He’s now considered stable but still ‘critical.’
Although Dillon is now “resting comfortably at home,” Amy said his condition “remains critical.” Not only did doctors discover a 4-inch tear in his diaphragm, but his right kidney, appendix, colon, and small intestines have been “displaced.”
“The risks are high, the procedures complex, and the recovery uncertain,” she said. “We are taking this one moment at a time, clinging to hope, prayer, and the wisdom of the medical teams who are now walking this road with us.”
Amy said Dylan’s diagnosis has ‘shaken our family deeply.’
“Dillon is a fighter – anyone who knows him knows his strength – but even the strongest among us sometimes face battles we never anticipated,” she said, per People. “We will share more as we’re able, but for now, our focus is on Dillon’s health, our family’s faith, and the fight in front of us.”
This sounds like a scary diagnosis to navigate, but hopefully, Amy and Dillon both have plenty of support on his road to recovery. Here’s hoping her next update on his condition is a positive one.
