Despite Amy Duggar, known for being the “rebel cousin” of the Duggar family of 19 Kids and Counting and Counting On fame, having some dedicated critics, she received plenty of well-wishes when she publicly shared husband Dillon King’s health issues. In early April 2025, Amy posted a photo on Instagram of Dillon in the hospital, writing in the caption that he had “possible life threatening medical concerns.” So when she shared a video of him smoking and drinking in her Instagram Stories, she faced immediate backlash.
Amy told People that Dillon was diagnosed with a severe diaphragmatic rupture and that his colon, small intestines, right kidney, and appendix were “displaced.” According to the National Institutes of Health, individuals with this condition can have severe issues with the aorta, lung, pelvis, or spleen in the event of a blunt injury. For those who saw Amy’s video in her Instagram Stories before it expired, as Stories do after a determined amount of time, it was confusing to see Dillon drinking and smoking after his hospital scare.
Amy Duggar was called out for her husband’s drinking and smoking in an Instagram video.
Although the video is no longer on Amy’s Instagram profile, one eagle-eyed follower shared it to Reddit before it was too late. In the video, Amy, Dillon, their son Dax, and Amy’s mom, Deanna Duggar, are sitting on their patio eating dinner. Dillon has a steak in front of him on his plate, a glass of a dark liquid that appears to be alcohol, and has something in his hand that he’s smoking.
In the past, Dillon has smoked cigars and Amy has shared videos of that too, so this isn’t totally out of the realm of possibilities. But given Dillon’s “possible life threatening medical concerns” that occurred mere weeks before Amy shared this video, people were a bit shook. So much so that they almost immediately called out Amy in the comments on Reddit.
One commenter wrote, “Jesus, this family is such trash. And no one would even know or guess if Famy weren’t such an attention seeker.”
Another commented, “In the words of Barbara Evans (Jenelle’s mom) from Teen Mom 2, ‘High! High! Ya both high!'”
There’s no confirmation on what Dillon is smoking in the video. But the fact that he appears to be eating red meat, drinking alcohol, and smoking anything is cause for scrutiny among those who are quick to criticize Amy and the rest of the Duggar family.
To be fair, another user speculated, “Are we sure this is weed? I assumed it was a Cigarillo thing which is even worse in a sense.”
Either way, no one is letting Amy off the hook.
Amy shared an update about Dillon’s health.
A few weeks after Dillon’s health scare and diagnosis, Amy posted a photo of him cooking in their kitchen. In the caption, she wrote that while she was out shopping all day with her mom, Dillon was cooking. She shared that he even surprised her with flowers. In the comments, someone asked how Dillon is doing now, which was at the time, a few weeks after the post about his visit to the hospital.
“He’s taking it easy!” Amy replied at the time. “Still in pain but you’d never know from this photo! There’s just SO much sitting and relaxing one can do before you start to get a lil stir crazy. He isn’t the type to stay down!”
Apparently, taking it easy also means having a drink and smoke, and no one is eager to let Amy live that down.
