MTV viewers were first introduced to Catelynn (Lowell) and Tyler Baltierra on MTV’s 16 and Pregnant in 2009. After the birth of their daughter, Carly, they placed her with a couple in an open adoption. And recently, Catelynn set the record straight about Tyler reportedly giving her an ultimatum during that trying time in their lives.
The Teen Mom stars have since married and welcomed three more daughters: Novalee, 9, Vaeda, 5, and Rya, 3. Today, Carly is 15, and her adoptive parents, Brandon and Teresa Davis, have cut contact with Catelynn and Tyler. The heartbroken reality stars recently spoke out against the Davises’ decision to close the adoption — and in doing so, they sparked a new wave of criticism, including the “ultimatum” rumor.

Catelynn Baltierra recently addressed Tyler's rumored 'ultimatum.'
On September 19, Catelynn shared a TikTok video directly addressing misinformation about herself and Tyler. “I can’t believe that I am having to hop on here and talk about this. But, here I am,” the mom said. “I wanted to set something straight. I am seeing the comment a lot that people are saying that Tyler gave me an ultimatum, either my baby or him.”
She called it 'disgusting on so many levels.'
Catelynn went on to explain that when people make accusations like that, it “strips me of all of my strength and sorrow that it took me as a birth mom to place my child.”
She continued, “If you think that I would just give my baby away for a man, that is absolutely untrue. And to think that I would still be with said man after all of these years if he did give me an ultimatum with either my baby or him, that’s absolutely disgusting.”
Additionally, Catelynn clarified what Tyler meant in a 'Teen Mom' scene that likely started the rumor.
In her TikTok video, Catelynn pointed out that Tyler, like herself, desperately wanted to keep Carly and spent “many nights crying just like” she did.
“I know that there was a scene, you know, that was filmed, that Tyler said that he thought that if we would have parented Carly that we would not be together,” she continued. “He’s not implying that if I didn’t place Carly, he would have broke up with me. What he is implying is that teen parents typically do not stay together.”

She also expanded on teen parents typically breaking up.
“If you look at our show, a majority of all the parents that decided to parent their children, nine out of 10 of them are not together,” Catelynn continued in the TikTok. “Because teen parents go through stress and all of the things to raise a baby.”
She added, “So I agree with him. If we would have kept Carly, we probably still wouldn’t be together and we still wouldn’t have had all these other children that we have had in this life.”
Finally, Catelynn issued an important reminder.
Catelynn reiterated her main point as she concluded her direct message to fans.
“As a birth mom who placed her child, he did not force me,” she said of Tyler. “It was my own strength, my own power, my fighting my mental demons on the daily for nine months and even after she was born for the three days that we had her.”
Finally, she issued a blunt reminder to followers, noting, “Remember, if you’re not involved in adoption at all, sit back and keep your mouth shut.”
