Through the years, Tyler and Catelynn Baltierra have shared about their open adoption journey with their first daughter, Carly. The Teen Mom stars have become increasingly outspoken in recent months since the adoption was closed. And recently, Tyler and Catelynn finally revealed why Carly’s adoptive parents, Brandon and Teresa Davis, cut contact with them.
In 2009, Catelynn’s teen pregnancy with Carly was featured on MTV’s 16 and Pregnant. Her and Tyler’s story continued on Teen Mom as they welcomed three more daughters. Novalee arrived in 2015 (the same year Tyler and Catelynn married), followed by Vaeda in 2019, and Rya in 2021.
Recently, Cateynn Baltierra revealed why Carly’s adoptive parents cut contact.
On the March 27, 2025, episode of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter, Catelynn spoke to costars Kailyn Lowry and Maci Bookout about the fallout with Carly’s adoptive parents.
“Brandon and Teresa straight up told our adoption counselor Dawn, ‘Yeah, I had to block her for my mental health,’” Catelynn revealed. “And I was, like, ‘Your mental health, your mental health?’ I mean, it was like anxiety. I literally felt every emotion come up of when I hugged her in the hospital and told her bye.”
Teresa reportedly expects an apology.
During her chat with Kailyn and Maci, Catelynn offered further insight into her dynamic with Carly’s adoptive parents. Teresa and Brandon apparently expect her and Tyler to apologize to them for speaking out about their struggles.
“Dawn says, like, ‘Oh, Teresa said, you guys are going to have to have a talk, that she needs to have a very sincere apology,’’ Catelynn explained. “I said, ‘You? You need an apology? For what? For me putting the truth out about how you are as a human and what you did to us. I deserve a f–king apology.”
Catelynn confirmed in January that Carly’s adoption was closed.
On the show, Tyler and Catelynn discovered that Teresa had blocked her messages.
In a January interview with E! News, Catelynn confirmed that Brandon and Teresa “have 100 percent closed the adoption.” She and Tyler no longer have access to Carly.
“I’m still blocked and they recently told me to quit sending gifts because it was inappropriate and uncalled for, just a whole bunch of things,” Catelynn explained.
At first, they didn’t have an explanation.
Catelynn and Tyler were understandably frustrated by Teresa blocking them – mostly because there was no reason given for the move.
“If it’s Carly not wanting contact, it would hurt, but we would understand and say, ‘Hey, if you ever want to have it, we’re here and we totally understand that all of this could be hard for you,’” Catelynn told the news outlet.
That is why Tyler and Catelynn have continued speaking out.
“If it’s just her parents acting out of fear, it’s my duty as a birth mom to show this child that I’m continuously fighting for communication,” Catelynn stressed. “Because that’s what’s ultimately the best for her, if that’s what she wants.”
The reality star mom concluded, “I think my hope is whatever she wants. If she wants to have a relationship with us, awesome. If she doesn’t, totally understand – whatever that looks like for her.”
