It happens to everyone at some point. Whether it's a ridiculous typo, an unflattering hand placement in a photo, a wardrobe malfunction, or just saying something really, really dumb, we all embarrass ourselves on social media from time to time. But thankfully, we're not celebrities. Because when famous people have cringe-worthy moments on social media, millions and millions of people witness them. Even though many celebs are lucky enough to have social media managers, many don't and even those who do sometimes take their social accounts into their own hands — and it doesn't always go so well.
Just like regular people, stars sometimes post photos with weird stuff going on in the background or even more frequently, they suffer from major photo editing fails. But it's not always pictures that cause embarrassing situations for celebs — sometimes, it's what they say. And let's be honest, a lot of celebs are just really out of touch and can say some things that come off totally wrong.
So yeah, stars are not immune to social media mishaps, and unfortunately for them, the world is clocking every one of their slipups. We're all human — if anything can make a celebrity more relatable, it's this. So we thought we'd share a few of these embarrassing social media moments to help our readers feel just a bit better about their own faux pas. Here goes …
Ramona Singer
Real Housewives of New York City star Ramona Singer messed up big time when she accidentally posted a screenshot of her bank account statement to her Instagram story, revealing both her balance at the time, as well as who she's received payments from. She deleted the post, but not before some Instagram users took screenshots of their own.
Chris Evans
Captain America star Chris Evans dropped more than a few jaws when he accidentally posted a picture of a penis on Instagram. The actor, who has only officially been on Instagram since 2020, was sharing a screen recording of himself playing the game "Heads Up!" with his extended family. It ended with an image of his camera roll that revealed his (or someone's) man parts. He handled it in stride, though, and basically laughed it off.
Kris Jenner
Several years ago, Kardashian-Jenner matriarch Kris Jenner — who presumably has enough money for as much Botox and fillers as she could ever want — got caught blurring out the lines on her face in a picture she took with celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay. They both posted the same photo on Instagram, and Kris' was airbrushed while Gordon's revealed all the lines and creases she had edited out. She even seems to have blurred Gordon's face a bit.
Scott Disick
Kris Jenner's almost-son-in-law also made a blunder on Instagram a few years ago, when he was supposed to create a sponsored post for a supplement company and copied and pasted too much of the original message from his PR person, including the instructions for the post. The post went out on Insta and Twitter before he deleted it.
Rita Ora
Back in 2014, a tweet went out from British singer Rita Ora claiming that if she got 100,000 retweets she would release a new song. When that failed to happen, Rita tweeted again, saying that her account got hacked and that someone was trying to release her music without her permission. It doesn't make a lot of sense, but we'll never know the truth.
Beyoncé
Bey can do no wrong, except for maybe when it comes to photo editing. The superstar has been caught in Photoshop fails on more than one occasion, but the first one that comes to mind is when she quite obviously slimmed down her thighs on the golf course. While she was a bit thinner at the time, that shape is definitely not natural.
Kim Kardashian
A while back, makeup guru and reality TV star Kim Kardashian tweeted about her favorite Giorgio Armani foundation being discontinued, and the company replied offering to send her her own personal stash, but not without pointing out that she had spelled Mr. Armani's name incorrectly. Ooops!
Mary J. Blige
Poor Mary J. Blige. Several years ago, the R&B singer tweeted about people questioning how smart she is, but typos got the best of her, making her look not so smart after all. We're sure she was just typing too fast and failed to check her tweet before sending it, but still, it was definitely embarrassing.
Rob Kardashian
At one point, the sole Kardashian brother claimed on Twitter that he was getting ready to attend law school at the University of Southern California. But someone at USC's Gould School of Law was not having any of his shenanigans and replied to his tweet saying that Rob had never even applied. We're guessing he probably wasn't even welcome after that.
Lindsay Lohan
Former child star Lindsay Lohan could have used more than a little help with her photo editing software when she worked on this snapshot. She was apparently trying to give herself a bit more booty, but the curves she added extended to the doorway behind her, making it quite obvious. She has a tendency to wipe her Instagram account clean and start fresh on the regular, but plenty of people got screenshots of the mishap before that happened.
Khloé Kardashian
In the spring of 2021, an unedited photo of Khloé Kardashian in a bikini made it onto the Internet, and she basically freaked out about it. She quickly had the photo scrubbed from every site in the US that had shared it and then she went so far as to do an Instagram Live to prove to people that her body is indeed perfect. It wasn't the original photo that was embarrassing, but her reaction totally was.
Jonathan Cheban
OK, we know he's a pretty minor celebrity, but anyone who watches KUWTK knows who he is. Kim K.'s best friend, Jonathan Cheban aka "Food God" — who essentially works as an influencer — once took to Instagram and asked his followers in a poll whether they wanted him to go live, and the answer was a clear "no." Ouch!
Gal Gadot
Even superheroes screw up sometimes. Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot tweeted a heartfelt message when renowned scientist Stephen Hawking died, but she was almost immediately called out for the "ableist" wording of her tweet. Her intentions were obviously good, but we can't imagine how mortified she was that her words were taken the wrong way. We doubt she ever meant to insinuate that Hawking's disability impeded his intelligence.
Oprah Winfrey
Way back in 2012, legendary talk show host and journalist Oprah Winfrey kind of put her foot in her mouth while promoting the Microsoft Surface tablet on Twitter. She tweeted how much she loves the Surface, but she did so from an Apple iPad, kind of defeating the point of what was likely a sponsored post.
Gina Carano
Former UFC fighter and Mandalorian star Gina Carano didn't just embarrass herself on social media, she got herself fired. After Disney found several of her transphobic and culturally insensitive tweets (as well as tweets claiming fraud during the 2020 election), they gave her the boot with no plans to work with her again in the future.
Chrissy Teigen
Even being a prolific tweeter didn't save Chrissy Teigen from royally screwing up. Back in 2019, she accidentally posted her email address, resulting in a bunch of randos trying to video chat with her. Like usual, though, she was able to do some damage control and laugh at herself.
Kim Kardashian (Again)
Another major Kim Kardashian social media fail came in 2020 when she posted a bunch of photos from the massive tropical getaway she threw for the dozens of people she considers her closest family in friends, in honor of her 40th birthday — in the middle of a global health crisis. Needless to say, the millions of people quarantining at home at the time weren't thrilled.
Zac Efron
Actor Zac Efron proved that he is every bit the out-of-touch celeb back in 2016 when he tweeted that he was thankful for Martin Luther King Jr. and for reaching 10 million followers. Not just on the same day, but in the very same post, which was of course, a picture of himself. OK, dude.
Kourtney Kardashian
Kourtney Kardashian is in a new relationship with Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker, and they have been super public about it. But things might have gone a bit too far when in honor of her birthday, Travis posted an extremely NSFW video of her sucking his thumb. People were quick to point out that even Kourtney's own 11-year-old son Mason could have seen it.
Chrissy Teigen (Again)
Chrissy Teigen got flamed when she got too excited and posted the results of the Voice finale before the show had aired in all time zones back in 2019. She had to remove the post and issue an apology for the spoiler. We're pretty sure we still sense a bit of snark in that response though.
Katy Perry
Singer Katy Perry totally fell for a fake video of people in Italy singing her song Roar from their balconies during the health crisis. She retweeted the video of something that never actually happened along with the caption: "You cannot break the human spirit. We are one in this." Though it appears that she's since deleted her retweet, the video in question is above.
Doja Cat
Back in 2020, singer and rapper Doja Cat, whose father is Black, nearly got canceled after someone discovered that she had been hanging out in racist internet chat rooms, particularly a platform called Tinychat. Her career is still going strong today, but that definitely wasn't a good look.
