No matter what job a person has, or how famous they might be, a full life means having hobbies and interests outside of work. When it comes to hobbies, most celebrities probably have similar ways to unwind as any regular person might have. According to recent research, some of the most popular hobbies in the US are things that most of us enjoy, including watching TV, reading, spending time in nature, working out, and sports activities.
For those of us who love to follow celebs on social media, those sound familiar, right? We've all seen celebrities sharing about their most loved TV shows, current reads, and fitness favorites, so hobbies might actually be one of those areas were stars really are just like us. But are there famous people whose hobbies go in a more off-beat direction? Well, yes, it turns out that there are some really big celebrities who have hobbies that are quirky, weird, or downright unusual!
Now, we should be clear that we don't mean weird in a bad way. While we may not want to keep snakes or learn to speak a language invented for Star Trek (yes, there are celebs who speak Klingon!), we're not judging these as good or bad, just noting that these are hobbies or interests that are a little off the beaten path. Read on for snapshots of 15 celebrities who have some really interesting hobbies.
Beyoncé
Everyone knows that Beyoncé is the Queen Bee, but who knew that this was basically literally true! In a 2020 interview with British Vogue, Beyoncé revealed that she keeps bees, estimating that she (and, realistically, her staff) has more than 80,000 bees and that her hives produce hundreds of jars of honey a year. Sweet!
Mike Tyson
He made his living and got his fame through his fists, but Mike Tyson has a surprisingly gentle hobby: He raises racing pigeons. He's said to have loved the birds since he was a kid and has kept them for years. Some reports indicate that he once even broke up with a girlfriend when she suggested that they cook and eat one of his birds, which seems like a completely reasonable choice for a man who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars into this hobby.
Taylor Swift
Anyone who follows Taylor Swift on social media knows that she has a total crafty and domestic side, including making cookies for fans and doing group craft projects with some of her famous friends. Apparently, one of her projects has been making homemade snow globes to give as Christmas gifts.
Angelina Jolie
Angelia Jolie has always had a sexy and low-key dangerous vibe, especially in her wild child days before she became a mom. One of the hobbies she was known for in her early days of fame was collecting daggers, something she apparently began doing when she was only 11 years old! She told W magazine that she even shared that hobby with her son Maddox.
Rosario Dawson
Star Trek is one of the most popular science fiction shows of all time, and its fans are known to be super die-hard, including learning how to speak the fictional language of Klingon. Although she doesn't claim to be fluent, Rosario Dawson has been known to drop a word or two in interviews.
Leslie Mann
Riding a bike: super normal hobby. Riding a unicycle: not so much. Actress Leslie Mann started riding a unicycle when she was 10 and taught herself how to use it. She once told O magazine that she can "do all kinds of tricks, like cycling backward and jumping off curbs." That is some impressive core strength, Leslie!
Tom Hanks
In terms of looking for a celeb with a hobby that is super chill and kind of sweetly nerdy, Tom Hanks might just be our guy. Tom loves vintage typewriters and has said that he has more than 250 of them in his collection, most of which are still in working order. We're just dying to know how one would store or display 250 typewriters! Can we get a house tour video, please?
Will Smith
So let's recap. Will Smith can rap. Will Smith can act. Will Smith has written a book. All of those things are impressive, of course, but we're kind of obsessed with the fact that he can solve a Rubik's Cube in less than a minute.
Joe Manganiello
When we were growing up, there were some particular stereotypes about the kinds of guys who were super into Dungeons & Dragons. And let's be real, that stereotype did not include dudes who looked like Magic Mike star Joe Manganiello! Apparently he runs the most exclusive D&D group in Hollywood. Who knew that was a thing?
Susan Sarandon
Actress Susan Sarandon is one of those people who figured out how to monetize her hobby. She's really into pingpong — and not just playing it! Since 2009, she has actually been part owner of a franchise of pingpong bars called Spin.
Dominic Monaghan
British actor and Lord of the Rings star Dominic Monaghan loves animals — and not just the cute and cuddly ones! He keeps a variety of insects and reptiles, including a pet black widow spider and an albino snake. He even has a species of spider named after him.
Gordon Ramsay
While lots of celebrities may have fitness hobbies, few are as hard-core as celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay's. He's run 15 marathons, five ultramarathons, and even competed in four of the grueling Ironman triathlons. Good thing he has a healthy way to burn off all the stress that he builds up when dealing with idiots on his reality shows!
Ed Sheeran
One of the new trends in Britain is apparently something called "wild swimming," which is basically a fancy way of saying outdoor swimming in something other than a pool, like a pond or a lake. Singer Ed Sheeran is said to be a fan of this quirky hobby, even having a pond installed on his property.
Seth Rogen
We all know that Seth Rogen's biggest hobby might be getting stoned, but he's also gotten into making pottery. Does his new pottery hobby include making ashtrays and other accessories a smoker might need? Of course it does!
Rod Stewart
Choo choo! British singer Rod Stewart has evidently been been working on building an epic model railway for well over 20 years. His replica of a US city features skyscrapers, a river, and even a working replica power plant. He's been featured on the cover of Railway Modeller magazine, which is apparently a real thing.
