Being a celebrity means getting your picture taken a lot — in some cases, almost every single time you leave the house. With all those flashbulbs going off, we'd imagine it gets pretty stressful. And with all that smiling, we'd imagine your cheeks would definitely start to hurt. What's the solution? Making the decision not to smile for the camera at all, of course, which some celebrities have been doing for years.
There are rappers such as Kanye West and Eminem, who always look serious when the cameras are around. And then there are celebrities who have never tried to hide how happy they are in their personal lives, such as Kim Kardashian, but who prefer to strike a more serious pose when they're on the red carpet. They might not flash their pearly whites all that often, but they've found poses that work for them — and who are we to tell them to smile?
Read on for the celebrities who have made a habit of not smiling when they pose for pictures. It might not be conventional, but it's what they want to do (and they still look good doing it).
Victoria Beckham
Not even when Victoria Beckham was better known as Posh Spice did she smile for photos — the other Spice Girls teased her for it on a pretty regular basis. Once in a while, Victoria will be caught smiling when she's with her kids — Brooklyn, Romeo, Harper, and Cruz — but most times if she's in front of the camera, she's all business.
Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen
Growing up, Mary-Kate and Ashley were all smiles on Full House, but a lot has changed since then. Now the happiest they look in public is the pursed lips they're giving in photos such as this one. But that doesn't mean they're not happy living their lives behind the scenes in the fashion world rather than in front of the cameras.
Billie Eilish
Even at just 19 years old, Billie Eilish has a very carefully crafted image — and that image includes never smiling for the camera. Though she's recently loosened up that policy with her latest album era, Happy Ever After, we've still seen Billie keep it serious at red carpet events more often than not.
Megan Fox
Megan Fox's whirlwind romance with Machine Gun Kelly may have her smiling these days, but as far as photographers who might capture her are concerned, those grins are private. Megan has a pretty intense demeanor when she's posing for pictures, after all.
Kanye West
Kanye West has definitely had his happy moments — such as when he's with his kids or when he's eating ice cream — but for the most part, he wears a scowl on his face, likely intentionally. If he's on the red carpet, he's simply not smiling. Consider it part of his brand.
Kristen Stewart
The latest actress to take on playing Princess Diana isn't one for showing her teeth on the red carpet. Though Kristen will smile every once in a while, for the most part, her lips are firmly pressed shut if she's posing for photos, staying a bit mysterious.
Eminem
Because Eminem's brand is being pretty hard-core, it's not really all that surprising that he doesn't tend to smile when he's posing for a photo. In fact, most of the time, he looks like he's having a pretty bad day — even if he's at a red carpet event a lot of people would dream of attending.
Rooney Mara
After starring in movies like The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Rooney Mara's talent speaks for itself, so she doesn't have to prove anything to anyone — let alone smile for cameras if she doesn't want to. Even without a happy expression, she's gorgeous.
Bella Hadid
It's far more likely that we'd see a smile on Gigi Hadid's face on the red carpet than her sister. Bella Hadid usually keeps it tight-lipped when she's out in public, but it might be all of her modeling that's trained her to pose that way. Smiling doesn't happen a lot on the runway.
Kylie Jenner
Kylie can't help but look happy when she's with her daughter, Stormi, but when she's at work (aka, attending events and posing for dozens of photographers), she keeps it professional. Kylie always has her game face on, and her game face does not include a smile.
Leonardo DiCaprio
After a legendary acting career, Leonardo DiCaprio has a lot to smile about. But instead of looking happy when all eyes are on him, the best we can get out of him is mildly pleased, which is how he looks in this photo. Has he forgotten he's Leonardo freaking DiCaprio?
Halsey
Halsey has much to be happy about these days, between their recent album release, If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power, and welcoming their first child into the world. But when it comes to posing for photos, they leave the smile at home. To be fair, we can't blame them — they look good either way.
Daniel Craig
It wouldn't be very James Bond of Daniel Craig to be smiling all the time, would it? Still, this actor seems to be a pretty pleasant guy, even complimenting Kate Middleton at the premiere of No Time To Die, so it's likely his more serious looks in front of the camera don't represent his personality.
Lorde
With her most recent album, Solar Power, Lorde has taken a more positive (and literally sunnier) approach to life and her music at the same time. But for the most part, she avoids big smiles on the red carpet — and any other time photos of her are taken.
Uma Thurman
With an impressive career that includes starring in movies such as Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction, Uma Thurman's not messing around — on set or in front of photographers. Once in a while, she'll break out into a huge smile, but for the most part she poses with bland expressions like this one.
Kim Kardashian
We've seen enough of Kim Kardashian over the years to know that she definitely has her goofier moments — like on Saturday Night Live and Keeping Up With the Kardashians, of course. But when she poses on the red carpet, she isn't much for smiling. She lets her poses (and her outfits) speak for themselves.
Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp is known for playing a lot of unforgettable characters, such as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. What he is not known for: smiling for the camera. He's found a look for him that works, and he's sticking to it.
