15 Celebrity New Year’s Resolutions We Want To Steal for Ourselves

Hey, wanna hear a little secret? OK, here goes: There is nothing magical about starting a healthy new habit or deciding to get more organized on January 1. We all know that New Year's resolutions are officially a thing. We also know that we usually assume that they should start exactly on the first day of the new year. That said, we are also firmly convinced that some of us may still be in recovery mode for the first few days of January and may not have set our resolutions yet.

For those of us who are in that "want to do a resolution but haven't figured out what yet" camp, may we suggest turning to celebrities for some resolution inspiration? Although it might be easy to assume that celebrity resolutions are for things that might not be relevant for our real lives, like "Make sure the Grammy stays dusted" or "book private plane for Bali trip," it turns out that some of our favorite stars have made some surprisingly practical and helpful resolutions in the past.

Even though we can't confirm whether celebrities are more likely to keep their resolutions than the rest of us, we can confirm that there are some celebrity New Year's resolutions that we totally want to steal for ourselves this year.

Kourtney Kardashian's Phone Resolution

There are many, many things about Kourtney Kardashian's life that we don't relate to, but we suspect many of us could probably take inspiration from the resolutions she shared in 2015. They included: "To live more in the present and less on my phone"; "to refocus my priorities, making sure that 'me' is high on the list"; and "to allow myself to feel my emotions."

Meghan Markle's Potty Mouth

Before she was dating Prince Harry, Meghan Markle was an actress with a popular lifestyle blog (The Tig, sadly no longer found online) and a relatable set of New Year's resolutions. As reported by The Telegraph, Meghan wrote in 2016 that she wanted to "stop biting [her] nails, stop swearing, and relearn French." She also explained, "The swearing comes in lulls triggered by being overworked or feeling mighty cheeky after a couple drinks," which is very understandable, to be honest!

Candace Cameron Bure's Words for the Year

Actress Candance Cameron Bure recently shared on Instagram that her resolutions for 2023 are centered on two words. The religious star explained: "I'm embracing my word(s) for the year — confidence and joy. I will have confidence in the Lord (not just in myself) and joy through every trial, hardship, and circumstance because He has paved and lit my path. He calls us to endure, which brings us proven character and hope, which does not disappoint. I will listen, learn, and follow His calling and have confidence and joy no matter what the year may bring."

Gwen Stefani's Dirty Resolution

We think of Gwen Stefani as a fashionable and chic singer who always looks perfectly styled and dressed to the nines. But she has a more down-home side, too, and it's something she'll be tapping into more this year. She shared with E! News that her 2023 resolution is dirty — literally! As she explained, some dirt is in her future.

"I think my resolution's gonna be to make sure that I educate myself more on gardening because that's my new hobby with [husband] Blake [Shelton]. And we had a failed gardening year this year. I mean, we had a lot of things against us. There was a drought, so that happened. But we're gonna get smarter, and we're gonna have some success next year."

Camila Cabello Gets Sporty

Here's what we love about Camila Cabello's resolution: It's focused on the fun side of fitness and isn't just about working out more. "New Year's resolution, one of mine, is to play more sports," the singer and cohost of The Voice told E! News. "It's not a joke. I really enjoy playing sports."

She also said she's recently been getting into the pickleball trend. "It's really fun and it brings me a lot of happiness. It feeds that competitive fire in me. It gets my rage out. It's just fun, so I want to do more of that."

Blake Shelton Cuts Back

Even though Blake Shelton hosts a show called Barmageddon, which is filmed in the country music star's Nashville bar, his goal is to cut back on his own alcohol consumption this year. He told Fox News Digital that he is "going to have one less drink a day" in 2023. That may be a good and doable goal for a lot of people!

Jessie James Decker's Fitness Journey

Singer and former Dancing With the Stars contestant Jessie James Decker is a self-described "workout nut" who shared with Fox News Digital that she wants to keep up her fitness journey in 2023. "I want to maintain the Dancing With the Stars figure that I got out of the show. That was life-changing," she explained. "To be honest, I'd never gotten in that kind of shape before. But I really enjoyed that fitness journey."

Teresa Giudice Wants Less Drama

Real Housewives of New Jersey star Teresa Giudice has a great resolution for 2023 — though we aren't actually sure we believe that she really plans to follow it! The drama-loving (and drama-causing) diva told People: "And you can manifest what you want in 2023. We've done that before. I just want peace, love, happiness, and health. Life is short, so you have to value the time that you have on this earth and surround yourself with good people, good vibes."

Olivia Culpo Writes It Down

Model, influencer, and former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo knows the power of taking a few minutes every day to reflect. We like the 2018 resolution that she shared on her personal website, which was to journal more.

"Journaling is a great practice to make a habit," she wrote. "Sometimes I write full entries about a learning lesson in my life or how I am feeling towards a situation. Other times, I write down goals I am striving toward or a quote that stands out to me. Whatever it might be, I find journaling very therapeutic and plan to increase this in the new year."

Jennifer Garner's Mealtime Resolutions

Honestly, if we ever find out that Jennifer Garner isn't as down-to-earth and, well, normal seeming as she appears to be on Instagram, we'll be a little crushed. Her New Year's resolution is such a good and attainable one: to make more meatless meals in 2023. We can totally do that!

Robin Arzón Goes for Balance

Peloton trainer and author Robin Arzón already has fitness on lock in 2023 (hello, her whole job is basically being in shape!), but she's focused on finding balance in the new year, which is good advice for all of us. She shared on Instagram that she wants to "reclaim the January messaging that feels overwhelming — take what works and leave what doesn't."

She also suggested including time and space for quiet reflection within your fitness and wellness routine. "Intense workouts paired with breathwork and moments of journaling and mindfulness are necessary in order to be what I like to call 'holistic hustlers,'" she noted.

Carson Kressley Learns Something New

We're never too old to learn something new, so we're into former Queer Eye star Carson Kressley's resolution from 2019, which he shared with Us Weekly at the time.

"To learn one new thing," he explained. "To be good at something. So I've been taking tennis lessons and I'm going to continue doing it. I used to be terrible and now I'm just really mediocre. So it's working."

Jennie Garth's Focus on Self-Care

There is an expression that says, "You can't fill from an empty cup," and it's a lesson a lot of us moms probably need to learn. It is so easy to put everyone else first and to fall to the bottom of our own to-do lists. Jennie Garth shared a great resolution about that with Us Weekly in 2017, and it is still just as stealable today.

She explained that her resolution was to "just keep up all the work that I've been doing lately. I've recently delved into self-care, and I think that continuing on that self-care, self-love path is the way to go."

Hoda Kotb Is Clear & Kind

We absolutely love this resolution from Today show host Hoda Kotb. She shared that she is taking her inspiration from the Brené Brown concept that "clear is kind."

"My New Year's resolution is to to always be clear," she told Today.com. "Just to do everything with intention and clarity, so people know exactly what you mean when you say something."

Willie Geist Plans To Read

We also want to steal another Today show host's resolution. Willie Geist wants to make more time for our favorite hobby. He told Today.com that he plans to read more for pleasure. "That's my New Year's resolution. I'm so deep in work stuff, I just want to read a good book more often, and I don't do it enough," he said.
