What to Know
Influencers, even former reality TV star influencers like Chelsea DeBoer from the Teen Mom franchise, have an obligation to at least try an item before they promote it on social media. Don’t they? Someone better tell Chelsea that, because she is getting called out on TikTok for allegedly improperly using a face cream she promoted on her platform.
In the TikTok, a user shared a clip from Chelsea’s post, where Chelsea does appear to use the cream she is promoting for sales. However, the user points out, Chelsea misses a few key steps to actually making the cream work. And now, other people are calling out the former MTV star for doing the bare minimum when it comes to product promotion on social media.
Chelsea DeBoer’s skincare routine isn’t exactly perfect.

In the clip shared in the TikTok, Chelsea applies a retinol cream to her face. But as she does it, she seems to spread it over a full face of makeup. Even those who aren’t privy to the inner workings of the skincare world probably know that you don’t put moisturizer or other creams meant to repair and help your skin until after you’ve washed off your makeup. And in Chelsea’s case, she has quite a bit of makeup on.
“Instagram is dragging Chelsea for this promo that she made for a retinol product, which is skincare, because she’s putting it on over, like, day old makeup,” the TikTok user explains in her video. “You see how dirty her skin looks and all splotchy and what not, especially all this blackness under her eyes. It looks like she went out, got hammered with her girls, came home, slept in her makeup. Here, she’s finally without makeup, but still slept in her makeup, and then said, ‘oh, crap, I’ve got a brand deal I need to publish by today.’ Slapped on her skincare over What is this, Chelsea? This is an absolute mess. And honestly, thank you for it. It’s so freaking camp.”
She was called out after appearing to use it incorrectly in her video.
It’s possible that, in Chelsea’s video, she is showing how to apply the cream and not actually claiming to apply it to her face with her foundation and other makeup still on and visible. Even in Chelsea’s original video on Instagram, though, it’s hard to tell if she is applying the cream to her face with makeup on it or just running her fingers over her skin to show how well the cream has already worked for her. Still, the internet doesn’t care about the specifics.
In the comments under the TikTok about Chelsea’s post, someone wrote, “I’m dead at Olay approving this.”
“Does anyone not keep makeup wipes on on their night stand for nights you just can’t be bothered to wash off your face,’ someone else commented.
Another person pointed out, “She suffers from Acne, I believe, she was likely feeling insecure to use this on bare skin for her promo but this isn’t it…damn just don’t take the brand deal.”
Chelsea DeBoer was criticized for her HGTV show too.
A couple of years after Chelsea left MTV for good, and husband, Cole DeBoer, were given their own HGTV show called Down Home Fab, about Cole and Chelsea running a home renovation and design business. After its third season ended in 2025, there wasn’t an announcement for a fourth, but on Reddit, Chelsea was trolled as some viewers wondered about her role in the business and design world.
In the post, the user wrote, “Chelsea reminds me of those girls we all grew up with that had men swarming around them, ready to act on her slightest whim – they never had to (or even learned) to do anything on their own.”
Someone replied, “I’m not familiar with her credentials so I could be wrong, but I don’t think she’s an actual Interior Designer. Her HGTV bio doesn’t mention any design schooling, but it does mention her 8.6 million Instagram followers.”
Hey, those 8 million followers got her some brand deals, so there’s that.
