Cher’s bold interpretation of Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard’s relationship has gone viral — probably because she said exactly what a lot of people were already thinking. During an appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast, the 79-year-old made it abundantly clear that she doesn’t really see what Kristen sees in Dax. The assertion was particularly bold, not only because Kristen and Dax were both sitting right in front of her, but also because Cher was a guest on Dax’s podcast.
In 2025, Kristen’s anniversary post went viral for all the wrong reasons. In the post celebrating her 12th wedding anniversary, Kristen revealed that her husband once said he wouldn’t kill her despite being “incentivized” to do so.
People did not find the anniversary post funny.
Kristen captioned the anniversary post with, “Happy 12th wedding anniversary to the man who once said to me:
‘I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I’m heavily incentivized to kill you, I never would.’❤️”
People found it concerning and insensitive. One person commented, “Domestic violence isn’t a joke.” Another said, “Not funny at all. What kind of man says that to his wife? Oh wait, I know exactly what kind. Get out now, Kristen.”
Cher told Dax that he’s “lucky.”
On his podcast, Dax said he was “grateful” for having “this woman” (referring to his wife) and their two kids. Right away, Cher essentially said he should be grateful, considering his wife is a better person than he is. “You’re lucky,” she told Dax. “She’s definitely the better half.”
The comment came up during a conversation about Cher’s memoir, and though they continued talking about the book, Dax later returned to Cher’s comment about his marriage. Clearly not over it, Dax said to Cher, “Who would be your dream partner for [Kristen]? ‘Cause I know you think she could be better, and I don’t disagree.”
Cher avoided answering the question, saying, “I don’t know,” and Kristen chimed in to tell Cher that her husband was “being self-deprecating right now.”
Dax said that he just wanted to know who would be good enough for his wife from Cher’s perspective. Kristen assumed that Cher had never thought about this before, and Cher agreed. Dax concluded, “She’s just not sold yet on me.”
Kristen told her husband that she just doesn’t have the same relationship with Cher that she does.
And he responded by saying that he also doesn’t have the talent that his wife and Cher both have. Meanwhile, Cher said, “No, but the truth is, I trust her, so you must have something that I don’t see.” Ouch.
The conversation did not end there though. Dax told Cher that he would “tell [her] the thing that [she] should like about” him: he is “not threatened by [Kristen’s] shining.” Reacting to this comment from Dax, one critic on Reddit said not feeling threatened by your partner’s success “isn’t an achievement, it’s the basics of a relationship.”
People also felt like Dax was embarrassing himself (and his wife) during the conversation. Someone else said, “Kristen feeling the need to explain to Cher ‘he’s being self deprecating right now’ is so embarrassing for her. He’s your husband not your five year old.”
The fact that Dax seemed hung up on Cher’s comment also bothered people. “this was very odd to watch,” one of them commented. “It felt like he was trying to goad a response so he could get angry at it.” The whole interaction felt off and unsettling to some people online, but people praised Cher for being “iconic.”
In response to her comment about Kristen and Dax, a fan said, “I love Cher — she has a great sense of humor and is very blunt! Is she wrong though?” Leave it to Cher to go on a man’s podcast and tell him exactly how she feels about him.
