Cher’s relationship might be unconventional, but she doesn’t think it’s anyone else’s business. The 79-year-old singer and actress has been dating her 39-year-old boyfriend, Alexander Edwards, for about three years now. Their significant age gap has raised eyebrows, but Cher doesn’t need others to understand her romantic relationship. During a recent CBS Mornings interview, Gayle King pointed out that lots of people have opinions about the 40-year age gap.
Cher simply said, “Whatever. They’re not living my life.” Those who have opinions about Cher and her boyfriend don’t know what their relationship is actually like. “Nobody knows what goes on between us, but we just have a blast,” she explained. Gayle pushed back on this a bit and asked her about whether the age gap has ever caused problems for them. “No, thank God,” Cher answered. “He just says, ‘You get older, but your spirit is younger.'”
When it comes to age gap relationships, people often wonder what the older partner and younger partner even have in common with each other. Unsurprisingly, Gayle also asked Cher about this, but Cher answered easily. “We laugh all the time, you know?” Cher explained. “I just love him. I think he’s beautiful. He’s really talented.” In fact, Cher said she truly believes that he’s “one of the most talented” people she’s met.
Though Cher and Alexander enjoy spending time together, she previously admitted that their age difference does lead to minor issues and miscommunications between them. In 2023, during an interview with Extra, she mentioned that they don’t always understand the same pop culture references. She said, “Sometimes I’m talking to him and he has no idea who I’m talking about… Most of my references… he’ll look at me and go, ‘I wasn’t born yet.'”
And during an appearance on Chicken Shop Date, Cher made it clear that it definitely wasn’t love at first sight when she met Alexander. In fact, in the early stages, some of his behaviors — like his texting habits — really bothered her. “I left to go to Switzerland and he texted me, ‘Where are you going?’ I said, ‘I’m going to Switzerland. I’m a little tired,'” she explained. “And then he wrote me, ‘Well, get some rest, babyyy,’ with three Ys. And I’m like, ‘He doesn’t know me well enough to put three Ys on baby.’ I was kind of p—ed off. And then he just started texting me.”
At the time, she was really irritated by the three Ys and she told her friends, “Don’t fall in love with a younger man, we’re too old. And don’t fall in love by text.” Now, her advice has changed completely. When asked to name one thing that every woman should do once, Cher said, “Go out with a younger man.”
