While some aspects of plural marriage might seem unusual to those who are in monogamous relationships, it once felt quite normal to Sister Wives star Christine Brown. However, now that she’s no longer with Kody Brown and is married to David Woolley, her views have shifted. In retrospect, some aspects of her plural marriage seem quite “weird” to her.
The fact that Kody was intimate with other women didn’t really bother her.
Many people tend to assume that polygamous marriages come with jealousy. But even though her husband had other wives, Christine Brown didn’t really envy them. On the April 27 episode of Sister Wives, she admitted that kissing Kody at the altar in front of his other wives, Janelle and Meri, felt “really awkward.” Christine also recalled how Kody would kiss all of his wives in front of one another on Valentine’s Day, which is something her now-husband David Woolley found “a little awkward” as well.
But it was largely normal for them.
Now, looking back, Christine feels like it’s “so weird” that she was married to someone “who had intimate relationships and kissed other women.” During her marriage, she didn’t have an issue with it. “It was fine because it was part of our culture and it’s what we did,” she explained.
She did start feeling jealous when Robyn joined the family.
Though she wasn’t jealous of Meri or Janelle, Christine admitted that her feelings started to change when Robyn entered the picture. She recalled thinking it was “nice” when Kody and Robyn got engaged, but when she heard that they kissed prior to marriage, she started feeling jealous. “Like a month later, I found out that Kody sealed the engagement with a kiss, and I freaked,” she admitted.
Christine says she’s surprised that she was ever OK with that dynamic.
Since leaving Kody, Christine has embraced monogamy. In 2022, she said, “I will be a monogamist from here on out. Polygamy is not for me anymore. People can do it, it’s fine. Live your life, but no, no, not me.” In October 2023, she married David.
These days, she’s surprised by what she was willing to tolerate in her previous marriage. “I can’t believe I was OK with that,” she said. “But it was a religious practice. I was 100% OK with it. I didn’t get jealous about it until Robyn came along.”
She previously said Kody made her feel insecure.
On an earlier episode of Sister Wives, Christine suggested that the jealousy she experienced was at least partly Kody’s fault. She recalled comparing herself to Robyn, thinking that Robyn “had a better couch” and “had better dishes and better decorations.”
But she believes that Kody contributed to this by putting pressure on his wives to look a certain way and by putting Robyn on a “pedestal.”
She said Kody “put pressure on me to look good, or to make sure my hair was done, or to make sure my makeup was on.” That made her feel less secure in her marriage. “No wonder I was constantly wondering and constantly insecure because, as much as I was comparing, he was also comparing all the time,” she added.
