On Thursday, Cory Wharton gave his fans and followers a sad update about his youngest daughter, Maya. Unfortunately, it looks like the 7-month-old’s scheduled open-heart surgery didn’t go quite as planned, and the little girl is sedated and on a ventilator.
Cory shared the news via video.
A somber Cory filmed an update in Maya's hospital room, showing fans a glimpse of his daughter before explaining what was going on. He posted it to his Instagram Stories.
"Maya's doing OK. She's not doing great," he said, before asking for prayers from his followers because she is experiencing some complications after her surgery.
Maya is in the hospital for the second of three planned surgeries.
"They're keeping her sedated right now because her left lung has some fluid in it, and she's having a hard time breathing on her own," he explained, adding that she would need to "push out all that fluid."
It sounds like Cory is hopeful that the fluid is behind her struggles because he said he expected her vitals to return to normal once that happened.
She's been put on a vent because she can no longer breathe on her own.
Toward the end of the clip, Cory finally revealed just how dire the situation had become.
"She's on a ventilator right now. She's not breathing on her own, and it's just — it's part of the process," he continued. "We're in good hands but yeah man, just keep us in your prayers. She's a fighter. She's going to make it through."
Cory thanked his followers for their support.
Before signing off, the reality star expressed gratitude for all of the love and prayers been sent his family's way since his daughter was admitted to the hospital at the end of December.
"We'll get through this," he concluded. "We just had a meeting with the doctors and nursing team, and we'll get through this. She's going to make it through. I know she will."
The little girl was born with a heart condition.
Maya was diagnosed with tricuspid atresia, a condition she developed in the womb. According to a post from Cory over the summer, the little girl would need three procedures to correct the issue, which prevents oxygen and blood from being correctly pumped into the lungs.
