When you’re an on-air television host or news anchor, especially working someplace like New York City which is constantly bustling, there are going to be moments that completely take you by surprise and you just have to roll with the punches. Unfortunately, for some, there may even come a time when your safety is at risk.
In mid-July, Today show host, Craig Melvin, was allegedly lunged at when a man was able to slip past security. He also reportedly had a racial slur yelled at him before security was able to detain the intruder and secure the set. Fellow journalist and Craig Melvin’s longtime partner, Lindsay Czarniak, recently spoke out about the frightening incident for the first time.

When you’re someone who has spent years reporting crime, it must feel very different to be on the other end of things, especially when you’re just at work trying to do your job.
Veteran American broadcast journalist and news anchor, Craig Melvin, was unexpectedly approached by an unauthorized individual in a building in Rockefeller Center in New York City on Thursday, July 16, 2026, USA Today reported.
The security incident escalated when the individual entered an area in Studio 1A while reportedly searching for the show’s weather anchor, Al Roker. When he came upon Craig, he allegedly threw himself at him and even yelled a racial slur.
Luckily, the incident resulted in “no altercation and no one was injured,” per the show’s statement read by USA Today.
Craig’s wife, Lindsay Czarniak, spoke out about what happened for the first time.
While promoting her new show, Game Day Murders, Lindsay Czarniak spoke exclusively to Us Weekly about what happened to her husband of 15 years.
“I’m so grateful that everybody in that situation is OK, of course,” she said. “It was wild. But we’re just excited that no one is hurt and that they can move forward now.” The couple share a son and a daughter together and met while working in news journalism in DC.
According to the magazine, the intruder was arrested and a security guard was fired over the incident.
After the unfortunate event, Craig addressed what happened in a statement shared by NBC News. He said that they are cooperating fully with the NYPD to investigate the incident and they are just “very happy that everyone is safe.”
After the racist attack, things have been set to change behind-the-scenes at the ‘Today’ show.
According to The Daily Beast, the Today show has ramped up their security measures after last week’s incident.
The suspect has been named as 41-year-old Andrew Truelove and both Al Roker and Craig Melvin have since filed a restraining order against him. Truelove was charged with burglary as a hate crime, menacing as a hate crime, criminal trespass as a hate crime, and harrassment, per the entertainment outlet.
As far as the show’s security is concerned, Today sent out an email to Hollywood publicity firms detailing that “in light of recent events,” they will be limiting the amount of people allowed in the studio to two persons per on-air guest with no exceptions.
Following the security breach, NBC released a statement noting that they are continually working toward “providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios, per People.
