Sometimes we do something before we gave it a full thought. And that might have been what happened to actor Dax Shepard, who recently found himself responding to a viral video of himself giving a bride a lap dance who also happens to be his “surrogate daughter.”
Dax has some explaining to do.
In a new Instagram post, Dax’s wife, Kristen Bell, shared a collage of photos to social media with a tribute to the “surrogate daughter” she and Shepard have. Her name is Hannah Anderson, and according to Today, she’s a singer-songwriter who recently married her longtime partner.
The wedding took place on September 16 in Oregon, and Kristen, Dax, and their two daughters, 10-year-old Lincoln and 8-year-old Delta, all attended.
In the social post, Kristen praised her 'surrogate daughter' and the beautiful time they all had at her wedding.
“Some kids you have by birth. Others you find,” Kristen’s post read. “You see this little seed and can instantly picture the beautiful garden they will become. I was lucky enough to find Hannah.”
Kristen’s post continues sharing that Hannah, their “surrogate daughter,” “came into our lives at 16, and even then she was an incredibly bright light.”
Over the years, the celebrity parents and Hannah grew very close.
“She served as a surrogate big sister to our girls, singing them to sleep on her guitar when they were babies,” the social share caption continued. “Holding space for her in our family has been such a gift to all of us. She is a woman of integrity, compassion, and incredible creativity,” she added.
Finishing the post, Kristen wrote, “We are honored to be your LA parents.”
The post included several photos and video clips from the wedding, but the last one really caught people’s attention.
The last share in the carousel was a video of Dax giving the new bride — his surrogate daughter — a lap dance. And it made people feel a sort of way, so they left some comments expressing their ick.
“I love this and it looks like an absolute beautiful day, but I’d be kinda weirded out if my ‘dad’ gave me a lap dance,” one person admitted.
“Awkward Dance!! Isn’t he her surrogate father??????? Who does that?” another person asked.
“Why is Dax giving a lap dance to your ‘daughter,’” someone else questioned.
“Love all the outfits,” another person shared, “but maybe not so much the daughter lap dance.”
“Was such a lovely post until the father daughter lap dance,” added someone else. “Wt actual f.”
“That’s so sweet but the lap dance is weird if you consider her like one of your kids,” shared another commenter.
Recently, Dax addressed the controversy on his 'Eff Won With DRS' podcast.
In the podcast episode, Dax said at the time, a song came on that Hanna and her friends all knew. And her friends pulled up a chair in the dance floor for the bride to sit in.
“They pull a chair out and then they throw Hannah in the chair. And you kind of immediately realize like, ‘Oh, people are going to give her lap dances,’” Dax explained. “A few different gals are giving her lap dances. I don’t know why I decide this, but I’m like, a girl should have a lap dance from a guy.”
Without thinking much, Dax jumped in, too. He explained that people were “laughing.” But when he was done, he realized that just before giving Hannah the lap dance, he spoke to her father.
“Then as I walked away all of a sudden I thought, ‘Oh, crap — her dad,’” Dax recalled. “Right before I walked over to the dance floor, I said, ‘Listen, we love being her surrogate parents!’”
It's really not a huge deal, and it’s an awkwardly hilarious story, which probably all weddings have.
