What to Know
It might be a little hard to keep up with which celebrity doctor or unqualified health professional is giving advice on behalf of Donald Trump this week, but Dr. Oz is still faithfully by his side. And when he mentioned the United States being “under-babied” during an Oval Office meeting in a clip on TikTok, it seemed to be the official stance of the White House.
Dr. O, whose real name is Mehmet Cengiz Öz , but who became famous as a doctor thanks to The Oprah Winfrey Show, is now the administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) under Trump. Because of that, he gives his medical advice in more of an official capacity than ever. And now, that includes advice on how American women aren’t having enough babies. It’s a bit concerning for all women, to be honest.
Dr. Oz said women need to have more babies.

According to Dr. Oz, being under-babied is dangerous to the United States because it means people have less babies than they want to have. I’m not sure if that’s a scientific fact or if Dr. Oz is just that sure that people want more children than they can afford, but OK.
“One in three Americans are under-babied,” Dr. Oz says in the TikTok. “What does underbabied mean? That means that you either don’t have any children or you have less children than you would normally want to have.”
Dr. Oz also said, per People, “We’re way below what we need just to replace the people that we have in America.” That doesn’t seem to take into account that childcare is expensive, maternity leave is a joke in the U.S., and people are already struggling financially. So to come back from the brink of this apparent under-babies pandemic seems a little impossible for some.
He claimed it is “the most creative thing” for women to do.

According to Dr. Oz, women having babies is the most important thing they can do with their lives. And hey, some women who become mothers might be inclined to agree with him. But when he claimed, “You have to get moms healthy enough to do the most creative thing the universe knows, which is making babies,” it might have been a bit much for some.
“Under paid, under appreciated, under healthcared, under housed, under daycared,” one user commented on the TikTok. “Over tired and over all of it.”
Someone else pointed out, “Under-babied means that billionaires need more customers and we need to produce them for them.”
“I can barely afford myself, why would I want a child?” Another wrote, which is a fair question, especially right now, with the U.S. in the state that it’s in.
A commenter also added, “We can’t even afford to breathe.”
Other users, mostly women, commented on the clip from the Oval Office meeting to share that they might be under-babied, but it’s because they have no choice financially. And, some wrote, they just feel plain weird about the way Dr. Oz worded it.
“This is so dystopian,” a woman wrote.
And, another said in the comments, “OMFG This administration is truly a clown show.”
Some women are open about not wanting babies at all.
Dr Oz saying the US is “under babied” is undeniably creepy.

You want people to have more babies?
Invest in better maternity leave. Paid time off. Affordable childcare, housing and education.
Restore reproductive rights.
Pregnancy is unsafe in States with abortion bans!
If Dr. Oz’s research shows that not enough people are having babies yearly in the U.S., it might also be because, well, some women just don’t want them. And that’s totally OK too.
“Under-babied? I want zero babies. I have zero babies. Things are going just as planned, tbh,” one wrote under the TikTok.
“Why is my decision to have or not have a child in my family any of their business?” Someone added. And, truly, when it comes to starting a family or growing a family, who needs Trump and his lackeys in on that?
