Things have changed a lot for the Duggar family since we first met them on 19 Kids and Counting, especially for Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar's oldest daughters. Initially, the children had to uphold their parents' strict dress code, which was tied to their strong fundamentalist Christian faith and ideals of modesty. That meant long skirts and dresses for girls (no pants), and don't even think about showing off those shoulders. Today, though? Well, those things are all a bit more negotiable.
As the Duggar sisters have grown up and left the nest, they've each started making their own decisions about how they define modesty and what they want to wear in their lives. For the most part, that's meant ditching those dresses and skirts in favor of pants and, in some cases, even short shorts (we're lookin' at you, Jinger Vuolo).

Jinger's Workout Look
For the longest time, we saw the Duggar ladies attempt to work out in skirts on Counting On, but no more. In July 2020, Jinger showed off her workout outfit on Instagram, and yes, it included actual shorts — of a surprisingly normal length, at that. Times have definitely changed.
Jill, the Swimwear Model
When Jill showed off her new swimwear, we definitely had to raise our eyebrows. After all, we'd never seen her in shorts that short before! Of course, this is still modest for a swimsuit, but it's definitely showing skin by the Duggar definition of the idea.
Joy on the Green
Joy? In shorts? We never thought we'd see the day, but it's finally come. In August 2021, Joy returned from a brief Instagram break to show off the shorts she wore while golfing with husband Austin Forsyth, truly surprising fans in the process. So cute!
Jinger's Casual Mom Style
Our first thought seeing this photo? We were impressed that Jinger was building a swingset for her daughters by herself, of course. But then, we immediately took notice of the fact that she was wearing cut-off denim shorts. They certainly show off all her hard work in the gym.
Jill Goes Sleeveless
Shoulders are taboo no more! Jill's shoulders were on full display in this photo from one of her date nights with husband Derick Dillard, and she looks totally cute. Of all the skin to show, shoulders have to be the least scandalous, but they definitely still count in the Duggars' universe.
Jana's Tank Dress
Since Jana still lives under her parents' roof, we totally get why she's still deep in the dress code (besides, maybe it's how she prefers to dress herself). But we were glad to see her enjoying a day out on the water in a tank dress. If it's hot out, she should feel free to bare her shoulders.
Jinger's Hiking Ensemble
Jinger and Jeremy have been getting outdoors a lot lately, and during a recent hiking excursion with daughters Felicity and Evangeline, Jinger wore a comfy tank top and shorts outfit, breaking multiple dress code rules at once. At least she was cool — carrying Evangeline on her chest had to have been a bit sweaty!
Jill's Denim Shorts
This was one of the first photos we ever saw of Jill in shorts, and even though we can just barely see the proof that she's actually wearing them, it definitely still counts! We've gotta give her props — she was one of the first to pave the way for her sisters.
Joy's Tank Top
More and more, Joy has gotten comfortable defining what her wardrobe should be for herself, and lately, that has included tank tops like some of her older sisters have been wearing. She wore this one when Austin picked her up from a trip to visit her BFF, Carlin Bates.
Jinger in Red
This is such an adorable photo of Jinger — and like many of her sisters, she wasn't afraid to show off those shoulders in a bright red tank top. Though we don't often see her in bold colors like this anymore, she should definitely consider bringing this one out of her closet again.
Jill's Birthday Outfit
Jill shared this photo with Derick in honor of her birthday in 2019. Not only do we love how happy she looks, but we also love the fact that she's letting those shoulders show — even if she did double up her tank tops to keep from revealing too much.
Joy's Tank Dress
This was one of the first sightings of Joy in a tank — and it wasn't even that long ago! In the summer of 2021, Joy posed with baby Evelyn in a black tank dress, looking cute as could be. She should definitely wear outfits like this more often.

If there was ever any photo to prove that Jinger has officially thrown caution to the wind where her wardrobe is concerned, it's this photo. A tank top and shorts at the same time?! We're loving how relaxed she looks, because she should be able to be cool and comfy while hitting the gym.

Another swimsuit modeling moment for Jill — we can only imagine what her parents must have been thinking when they saw this Instagram post! Again, it's totally modest for a swimsuit, but for Jill and her family, this was definitely considered revealing.

We don't love that Joy took this selfie with Evelyn when she was sick, but we do love her black and white striped tank top — and the fact that she's been feeling more free than ever to show off her shoulders these days. You do you, Joy!
