What to Know
Dwayne Johnson (or, of course, The Rock, as many of us know him) has always been known for his seriously impressive, very muscular physique. But even he has health issues from time to time… even if keeps them pretty private. In a new interview, Dwayne revealed he recently faced a cancer scare, but he totally hid it from his wife, Lauren Hashian, until he could talk to a doctor about it. A controversial choice, but maybe the right one under these specific circumstances?
Dwayne noticed something wasn’t right while he was in the shower.

In a new interview with Esquire, Dwayne admitted that, the previous Friday, he’d found a painful lump on his testicle in the shower. He hoped it would go away, so he kept his wife in the dark about it, knowing she’d stress out about it.
“I didn’t even tell Lauren,” he said. “I didn’t want to worry her before I knew if it was anything to even worry about.”
When the lump only got worse instead of better, he saw a doctor on Monday morning, who told him it was likely epididymitis, or inflammation of the tube that carries sperm, but sent him in for an ultrasound the next day anyway. Meanwhile, Dwayne had to put his worries aside while he was promoting his new Jumanjii movie like nothing was wrong.
“So I had to live with that for those twenty-four hours, not knowing — and I had to be on all day, joking around, making speeches,” he said.
Fortunately, he got the all clear from a doctor.
The good news: The ultrasound showed that the lump wasn’t, in fact, cancer, though it doesn’t sound like it was a very fun experience for him at all.
“By the way: I’m fine. But I didn’t know that then, and the thing was really painful,” he said.
He didn’t share Lauren’s reaction when he finally did tell her what happened, but if she was a little upset he didn’t keep her in the loop, who could blame her? At the same time, it makes sense that he wouldn’t want to worry her for no reason, but there’s no doubt she would have wanted to support him through that stress.
He and Lauren went through a rough spot in their marriage while he was filming the new Moana movie.
Also in his Esquire interview, Dwayne said that he and Lauren had a tough time while he was filming the live-action Moana movie, which made showing up to work happy and excited a challenge.
“And you know that, hey, the end goal here is, We’re going to anchor in even stronger and make this thing work,” he said. “The heartache of it from the moment you wake up and you know: I have to face this, and we have to face it together, when we decide to face it together — which we did — but first I had to go on set, and this character of Maui is a joy bomb. I’m trying to imbue this young girl, Moana, with confidence and power.”
It’s good to hear that things are going well between these two — and of course, that The Rock is as healthy as ever.
