Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union might seem like one of the strongest celebrity couples in Hollywood now, but they went through a seriously rough patch a few years ago that almost ended things between them forever. In a new interview, Dwyane admitted he "tried to break up" with Gabrielle when the time came to admit that he'd fathered a child with another woman while they were on a break — and what finally made him decide to confess and work through it with his now-wife.

Dwyane opened up about what happened back then while talking to athlete Shannon Sharpe.
After finding out that Aja Metoyer had gotten pregnant in 2013 when he was with her during a break in his relationship with Gabrielle, Dwyane said he "tried to pussyfoot" around telling her that Aja was pregnant — and he almost thought just breaking up would be easier.
On the YouTube channel Club Shay Shay, Dwyane said he tried to tell Gabrielle, "Hey, things have been bad lately … We’ve been having a little distance in our relationship anyway."
Gabrielle didn't let him out of the relationship that easily, though.
Instead, he said, Gabrielle just "kept showing up" for him, even while he was trying to push him away, and that led him to finally tell her what had happened.
"The whole situation is scary enough, you're a public figure. But you know that this is going to hurt someone that you’ve been building a relationship with and a life with," he shared. "No matter what people say on the outside, or what people want to think, ultimately you gotta sit with you, and you gotta sit with this person, and I had to sit with my wife and have this conversation."
She helped him get through it.
"I couldn’t have gotten through that moment without her sticking with me. That was a rough time for me," he said. "You got a lot on your mind. You’re keeping something from people you love. It’s heavy."

Gabrielle has been open about how much that time in their relationship hurt her.
In her 2021 memoir, You Got Anything Stronger?, Gabrielle said she was "devastated" when Dwyane told her that he had conceived a baby with another child in the midst of their own fertility struggles.
"The experience of Dwyane having a baby so easily while I was unable to left my soul not just broken into pieces, but shattered into fine dust scattering in the wind. With desperate hands, we gathered what we could to slowly remake me into something new," Gabrielle wrote.
Later, they would go on to welcome their own baby, daughter Kaavia, via surrogate in 2018.
All seems to be well between them 10 years later.
Dwyane and Gabrielle certainly did seem to live happily ever after, even after overcoming what must have been such a difficult relationship. It's a good thing that he did eventually get the courage to tell her what happened — imagine how different things would be for them both if he hadn't!
