Ed Sheeran Called Out After Revealing Newborn Daughter’s ‘Horrific’ Name

Even though Ed Sheeran usually keeps his personal life pretty private, this week, he shared a big update with fans: He and wife Cherry Seaborn welcomed their first child into the world! However, instead of being met with excitement, Ed's getting backlash for his baby's name … and we have to admit that the one he and Cherry picked out is a little bizarre.

Ed announced the birth of his daughter — and her name — earlier this week.

Even though Ed's been on a self-imposed social media hiatus since the end of 2019, he took a quick break to offer this sweet update to fans, letting them know that his daughter was here. He wrote:

"Last week, with the help of an amazing delivery team, Cherry gave birth to our beautiful and healthy daughter — Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran. We are completely in love with her. Both mum and baby are doing amazing and we are on cloud nine over here. We hope that you can respect our privacy at this time."

Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran. That's a lot to take in.

It didn't take long for people to weigh in with their opinions.

Comparing the baby's name to what someone would name a race horse? Yikes! We definitely get that it's unusual, but this may be taking it a bit too far.

Besides, Lyra is pretty, and Seaborn and Sheeran are simply her parents' last names. We totally understand why some people would think "Antarctica" was a bit much, though.

So many fans were just not impressed.

This one tweeted that she thought Ed was a "normal guy" and couldn't understand why he would name his baby after a continent… but at least Antarctica is her middle name and not her first. It might end up being a mouthful for her to say when she's still little and just learning how to talk, after all! Lyra is much easier.

Obviously, Ed and Cherry like the name, and that's all that matters.

There could be some meaning behind it that we're not aware of, and maybe they'll explain it to us someday. But in the meantime, all that matters is that this celebrity dad and his wife are happy with their choice.

Let's be real, there have been much stranger celebrity baby names over the years than Antarctica.

Here's hoping Miss Lyra Antarctica will grow up loving her name.

She's the one who has to live with it the rest of her life — not strangers on the internet sharing their commentary. And instead of worrying about Ed's baby name, what we really need is to get an answer on the real question: Does this baby happen to have red hair already?

We're going to need a photo ASAP, because it would be too cute if she's a ginger just like her dad.
