As far as getting starstruck goes, if it’s going to happen, it’s probably going to happen in front of a major A-lister like Angelina Jolie. This is a lesson that Emma Stone learned firsthand… but in her case, she wasn’t the one who was starstruck, it was actually her mom.
In her cover interview for the September issue of Vogue, Emma looked back at photos from the night of the 2011 Golden Globe Awards, which brought up a story involving her mom, Krista, who was her date that evening.
“The Golden Globes is sort of like these big, round tables and it feels like you’re just constantly running into all these people that you’ve only seen on TV or in movies,” Emma explained. “Everybody’s shorter than you think they are. Except for Conan O’Brien, who’s seven-and-a-half-feet tall.”
She and her mom were seated with Angelina and Brad Pitt, who were still married at the time, and in an effort to play it cool, Krista tried to act like she didn’t know anything about Angelina — or the fact that she very famously has a big brood of kids.
“That was a really, really fun night because I brought my mom and we sat next to Angelina Jolie and she asked Angelina Jolie if she had any kids,” Emma said.
As the Daily Mail pointed out, when Emma first told this story during a 2020 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she mentioned that her mom had been drinking before attempting to make conversation with Angelina, which isn’t typical for her.
“My mom never drinks and she had champagne that night, which was probably not the best idea, but she was having a wonderful time,” she said.
And to Angelina’s credit, Emma said that she was “so nice.”
“We had a blast,” she said. “That was a very fun night.”
Also, Emma’s mom should get a little credit for trying not to fangirl and make conversation as if she and Angelina were just two complete strangers, meeting for the first time. Not everyone would have been able to keep it together long enough to make that happen!
