While we realize lots of celebrities post staged pictures taken by professional photographers or at least savvy helpers almost exclusively these days, many still share at least the occasional selfie to their social media accounts — and if we're being honest, we totally live for them. It's the real reason we follow celebrities on Instagram and Twitter: to get just a tiny peek at moments from their real lives. All the other stuff is fun, but celebrity selfies are our favorite, and there have been some truly epic ones posted by stars such as Selena Gomez and Beyoncé throughout the years.
From group shots at major events like the Met Gala and the Academy Awards to shocking solo selfies, so many celebrities have used social media to reveal details about themselves and their lives to the masses. Some celeb selfies have been so epic that they practically broke the internet, and have earned a place in the pop culture history books.
Here, we've curated a bunch of our favorite celebrity selfies of all time — from private moments at home to shots from the most exclusive events in the world, they're all here. You'll see pics of everyone from Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner to Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden. So whether you missed these epic celebrity selfies the first time around, or you forgot all about them, look no further.
The Presidents
What better way to get in on the selfie game than to take a picture with the freaking president? Well, it's not too difficult if you just so happen to be the vice president and future president yourself. Then-Vice President Joe Biden christened his brand new Instagram account with this selfie of him and President Barack Obama. That's a lot of power in one picture.
Troye Sivan
Troye Sivan had a major moment at the 2021 Met Gala when megastar Rihanna evidently convinced Olympic diver Tom Daley to snap this picture of him using the urinal. Technically, it's not a selfie since someone else took the picture, but since Troye posted it himself, we'll give it a pass because the moment itself is so epic.
Lil Nas X & Billie Eilish
Talk about of-the-moment! At the 2021 Met Gala, rapper Lil Nas X was the king of the celebrity selfies, but our favorite picture that he took has to be this snap with fellow musician Billie Eilish. These two are some of the biggest stars of their generation, and this selfie definitely captures that.
Justin Theroux & 11
Actor and filmmaker Justin Theroux took advantage of a very cool moment he had at the 2019 Met Gala, when he ended up in an elevator with 11 other celebrities including Joe Jonas, Jennifer Connelly, and Emma Stone at the Louis Vuitton after party. "Super rare photo of the most exclusive @louisvuitton Met Gala afterparty. Only 12 people on the list. Takes place in an elevator. Party is only 30 seconds long. Had some really deep conversations," he captioned the photo.
Kylie Et Al.
Kylie Jenner is a Met Gala queen, and she proved it in 2017 with this totally epic bathroom selfie. She got everybody, including her sisters Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner, her man Travis Scott, music mogul Diddy, and a bunch of models and other celebs in on the action, documenting a very special moment.
Gisele Bündchen
This stunning selfie of supermodel Gisele Bündchen is so epic simply because she's so gorgeous. She looked like a golden goddess showing off the incredible custom eco-conscious gown that Versace made her in the spring of 2018. She typically posts more casual photos from her everyday life, so this glam selfie was a rarity.
Kim Kardashian
It's no surprise that Kim Kardashian pops up on this list more than one once. She's a celebrity selfie OG, but she still managed to break the internet in 2016 when she shared this completely nude mirror snap. She left just the tiniest bit to the imagination thanks to strategically placed black bars.
A-Rod, J.Lo, & Kimye
This was definitely a memorable moment in pop culture history. Less than two years before both relationships dissolved, former MLB player Alex Rodriguez captured this selfie of his then-fiancée Jennifer Lopez and former power couple Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, when they all attended the Met Gala.
Selena Gomez & The Weeknd
At the time this selfie was taken, Selena Gomez was the most-followed person on Instagram, so millions upon millions of people saw her debut photo with her then-boyfriend The Weeknd. The selfie was taken at the Coachella music festival and racked up more than 5 million likes within 12 hours.
Jon Hamm & Jon Hamm
Actor Jon Hamm showed off his silly side when he took a selfie with himself — well, the wax version of himself — at Madame Tussauds museum in New York. While some wax figures miss the mark just a tiny bit, this one was so spot on, it was shocking. Some of the photos looked like he was peering in a mirror, so we totally get why he had to capture the moment.
Beyoncé & Blue Ivy Carter
Beyoncé had a real mom moment when she took to Instagram to honor her eldest daughter Blue Ivy's birthday, and posted a rare selfie of her and her little one. It reminded us of all the silly selfies our own kids rope us into taking with them — and even though Bey still looked ultra-glam, it also made her seem kind of relatable.
Katy Perry & Orlando Bloom
Singer Katy Perry announced her engagement to actor Orlando Bloom in the most epic way when she posted the closest of close-up photos to her Instagram account, showing off her giant, flower-shaped ring. It was the perfect engagement announcement for her quirky personality.
Jennifer Aniston
Jennifer Aniston proved that she really is flawless with a makeup-free morning selfie from her car, which left her friends and fellow celebrities gushing over how gorgeous she is. The post racked up lots of positive comments including raised hands emojis from costar Mindy Kaling and "Queen!" from Selena Gomez.
50 Cent & Russell Crowe
They may seem like an odd pair, but we have a feeling rapper and entertainment mogul 50 Cent is probably a big fan of actor Russell Crowe's body of work. He made sure to get a few selfies in at the 2014 New York premiere of the film Noah while they were both making their red carpet appearances.
Kourtney Kardashian
Let's take a minute to talk about Kourtney Kardashian. In the past couple of years, she's made some serious body-positive strides. She's used her Instagram selfies to shed some of the stigma about perceived body imperfections such as cellulite and stretch marks, by choosing to embrace the changes that motherhood and age have brought.
Ellen & Everybody
People went nuts in 2014 when TV personality Ellen DeGeneres hosted the Oscars and walked out into the crowd to capture a selfie with a slew of other A-list celebrities, including Meryl Streep, Bradley Cooper, Brad Pitt, and Julia Roberts. Everyone looked genuinely happy, and it was just awesome.
Nicki Minaj
Rapper Nicki Minaj dropped jaws back in 2013 when she posted a completely topless selfie, in which just her long, straight tresses were used to cover up her nipples. Nicki's never been afraid to show some skin, and this was only the beginning of many ultra-revealing selfies to come.
Lady Gaga
In 2016, megastar Lady Gaga celebrated her 30th birthday on social media by posting a makeup-free selfie that really surprised people, mostly because everyone is so used to seeing her glammed up and completely transformed by cosmetics. Oh, and she proved that she does actually indulge in delicious sweets on occasion, too.
Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez also had a break-the-internet moment when she posted this incredible bathing suit shot. We all know she has an amazing figure, but she showed it off from a new angle in this casual, apparently makeup-free selfie, with her hair thrown up and her big hoop earrings on, again showing what a natural beauty she is.
Kesha
Fans of songwriter Kesha were thrilled to see her in this stripped-down selfie she posted in 2019. Typically over-the-top, she looked stunning with a bare face and showing off her freckles. She's been through a lot and definitely deserves some self-love. "This year, my resolution is to love myself just as I am, all [expletive] up and imperfect and whatever else. And to let my freckles liiiiiiiive," she wrote alongside the photo.
Beyoncé
We rarely see Beyoncé looking anything other than perfectly polished, so it was quite a surprise when she posted this selfie video, mid-glam-up. Not only that, but she actually captioned it, which she almost never does on social media. The caption was just gibberish, but we take it to mean she was having fun and living in the moment, and we're here for it.
