What to Know
After many seasons of Teen Mom and beyond, it’s become more than clear that Farrah Abraham parents in her own way — despite what others might think — and now that her daughter, Sophia, is 17, that still hasn’t changed. In fact, in honor of Sophia’s birthday, she and her mom got matching tattoos, and as usual, people have a lot of opinions about it.
Sophia shared a video from their tattoo appointment on Instagram.
Sophia and Farrah took a trip to Egypt for her 17th birthday, and that included a stop at a tattoo parlor where they got matching ink on the back of their necks — the words “eternal love” in Arabic.
“Our tattoos represent eternal life, eternal love, eye of Ra, eye of Horus, and inspired egyptian hieroglyphics as seen in ancient egyptian history!” Sophia wrote in her caption. “The Arabic writing translates to “eternal love”. I’m so happy and grateful i got to get this very special matching tattoo with my mom in egypt. 17 has been amazing so far!”
Farrah commented on the post herself, writing, “I can’t believe at 34 I got a matching tattoo with my daughter in Egypt.”
Soon enough, the criticism rolled in.
Though there were some people who thought that this was a really sweet moment between a mother and a daughter, others did not hold back when it came to how much they didn’t like the idea of Sophia and Farrah getting tattoos together before she turns 18.
“Farrah needs to get friends her own age,” one commenter wrote.
Usually, Farrah takes comments like these in stride, but she actually replied to one of the haters. One of her comments wrote, “A little cultural appropriation-y but whatevs, gotta be your kids best friend right? Not their parent…” and Farrah fired back, “I’m her parent- get your eyes checked.”
This was Farrah’s first tattoo, but not Sophia’s.
Farrah’s no stranger to dealing with critics who haven’t been impressed with Sophia’s body modifications — including both piercings and tattoos — in her teenage years. Her mom didn’t get inked as a teen, but Sophia certainly has, including a design including bats on each hip.
She may not make very conventional parenting choices, but at least she’s truly forged a close relationship with her daughter? That’s got to count for something.
