HGTV Fans So Outraged Over ‘Cheap’ White House Christmas Special They’re Threatening Boycott

Considering the totally over-the-top Christmas decorations that are typically put up at the White House each holiday season, it’s no surprise that HGTV has long aired specials about the decor each year. But for some fans, this year feels different.

After the network went ahead with their usual special over the weekend, highlighting the ways First Lady Melania Trump decorated her temporary home, fans are threatening to boycott HGTV for appearing to show support to Donald Trump‘s administration this way.

The special aired on Sunday night.

Dedicated to the team who makes all of those decorations in the nation’s capitol possible, the special followed the process of decorating the White House for the holidays.

“Hundreds of volunteers from across the nation decorate the White House for Christmas in just 72 hours. HGTV documents the process in this annual event, and this year, volunteers bring the First Lady’s theme, ‘Home Is Where the Heart Is,’ to life,” says HGTV’s description of the special, titled White House Christmas 2025.

The fans who did tune in weren’t impressed.

After one person on Reddit shared that they were watching the special (and actually really enjoying it), the whole thing basically got raked over the coals.

“Yeah not watching anything that has to do with that administration,” one commenter wrote. I was not happy to see that on HGTV.”

Many others are encouraging a boycott of the network.

Despite the fact that this is a special that has aired every year per HGTV tradition, people are upset enough that they believe a boycott may be their only choice in this situation.

“Until class and thoughtfulness and empathy are a thing again, I’m not interested in how Voldemort is decorating his lair for Christmas,” one person wrote on a separate Reddit post. “I do feel bad for the people who normally do that work, though. I’m sure it’s unfun for them, being used to decency and tradition.”

Another shared that they “changed the channel immediately” when the special began, and it sounds like they’re not the only ones.

So did enough people actually tune in to continue the tradition another year — even with Trump still in office? We’ll just have to wait and see what happens when the 2026 holiday season rolls around, but for now, it’s anybody’s guess if the special will return.
