Hilaria Baldwin says she and her husband, actor Alec Baldwin, didn’t really think through their plans for their reality show before they started filming. But they don’t regret it. In terms of their reasoning for doing the show, Alec has said that it was an opportunity to spend more time with his family while technically working at the same time. However, critics of The Baldwins have pointed to the suspicious timing, suggesting that Alec was trying to rebrand himself after his Rust shooting scandal.
The Baldwin family started filming their show just before Alec headed to trial.
In October 2021, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed on the set of the movie, Rust, when the prop gun Alec Baldwin was holding went off. Alec’s involuntary manslaughter trial started in July 2024. A month before that, in June, Alec and Hilaria started filming The Baldwins.
Looking back, Hilaria’s surprised that she and Alec decided to do the show at that time.
Looking back on their decision to move forward with the reality TV show, Hilaria said there are many things she and her husband didn’t really think about. Speaking to Us Weekly, Hilaria said, “I think we didn’t think it through very much, which I look back now and I’m thinking ‘What were we thinking?’ But at the same time, I’m so glad that we didn’t because it is so raw and it is so true and it was a very vulnerable time.”
She described The Baldwins as “a diary of how we were coping and moving forward” at the time. In retrospect, moving forward with the show was an interesting choice, but Hilaria doesn’t regret it. “It was during a time where I almost can’t believe that we agreed to do something during that time, and I’m really happy that we did,” she admitted to People.
It was actually ‘cathartic.’
One of the reasons Hilaria and Alec have no regrets? Filming the show was healing for them in a way. “It feels very cathartic to have everything be out there,” Hilaria told Extra.
When asked if there will be a second season of the show, Hilaria seemed to suggest that it’s possible. “This is a really raw show and it’s very real and we took a lot of chances and …” she said. We’ll see where it leads us. We’ll see what it feels like to have it out there, and then we’ll see if people like it.”
Previously, Alec said filming a reality show appealed to him because he could spend more time with his family.
Before The Baldwins premiered, Alec and Hilaria spoke to People about why they decided to film a reality show about their family.
“We did the show because it’s in place of doing a movie or a play,” Alec told People at the time. “Now I think to myself, ‘Am I going to be away from my kids five nights out of the week until 11 o’clock at night? For me, work-related things really aren’t that critical anymore. I thought, ‘I get to spend time with my family.’”
