Jada Pinkett Smith & Husband Will Smith Have Been Secretly Separated for More Than 7 Years

Over the course of their 26-year marriage, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have been through a lot of ups and downs, but a pretty big one has been happening behind the scenes without anyone finding out about it until now. On Wednesday, Jada revealed that she and Will have been separated since 2016, sharing the news for the first time in her upcoming memoir. Yeah, we have a lot of questions about this after everything that's happened in the last few years!

Jada said she and Will now live 'completely separate lives.'

In her memoir, Worthy, Jada revealed that she and Will decided to separate in 2016, and she opened up about their split in an interview with Hoda Kotb on an NBC News special set to air on October 13.

Jada told Hoda that even though she and Will are legally still married, for all intents and purposes, she considers their split a divorce.

They haven't felt 'ready' to share the news with the world.

Considering how shocking this revelation is, it seems that she and Will have done a good job at keeping their secret for the past seven years.

"Still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in partnership … In regards to, how do we present that to people? We hadn't figured that out," she explained.

She also shared the reason for their split.

"Why it fractured … that — that’s a lot of things … By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying. I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be," Jada said.

Since then, though, Jada and Will have continued to make public appearances together and have even spoken out about their marriage, including the fact that it was no longer monogamous. And who could forget Jada's famous "entanglement" with August Alsina?

But ultimately, she hasn't been able to pull the trigger.

"I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. We will work through … whatever. I just haven’t been able to break that promise," she said.

Now, Jada says she and Will are still 'figuring it out.'

In an interview with People that also came out on Wednesday, Jada said, "We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us."

As long as it works for Will and Jada — and their kids — that's all that matters.
