Jenna Bush Hager’s ring finger may have been bare during the September 25 episode of Today with Hoda and Jenna, but she has a very plausible reason for that. During the show’s segment “Social Dilemmas,” the 42-year-old journalist addressed the absence of her engagement ring while she and cohost Hoda Kotb responded to a viewer who’d requested their advice on an awkward situation involving an engagement ring. Here’s what the hosts had to say in response to the matter.

The viewer expressed her dislike for her engagement ring.
“Is it ok for someone to tell her fiancé she doesn’t like the family heirloom engagement ring?” the post was captioned on X (formerly known as Twitter). The viewer explained that she and her partner had been dating for three years and she knows “a proposal is on the way.”
The viewer said, however, that it’s a family tradition for an heirloom engagement ring to be passed down. “His mother’s ring is hideous. If he proposes to me using the ring, do I fake like I like it or tell him to get me a different ring?” the person asked.
Jenna gave her viewpoint.
Responding to the viewer, Jenna held up her hand. “I’m not wearing my ring but don’t worry,” she said. “We’re still happy together, but I broke my finger,” she explained, referring to her husband, Henry Chase Hager. She went on to explain that her engagement ring, which once belonged to one of her husband’s relatives, was redone by him.

She and Hoda had differing views.
Although Jenna continued on to express that the viewer should have a conversation with her partner before he proposes, Hoda expressed that she believes the viewer should just accept the ring. “If something’s been in the family for years and year and it means the world to them, this is a conversation that you might want to have,” she said.
Other viewers weighed in.
Some fans sided with Hoda. “If the engagement ring is even an issue worthy of debate, this marriage is doomed before it even begins,” one person commented. Another fan wrote, “Is it about the actual ring? Or is it about your love? Its about the love and the marriage NOT the ring.”
Some people did take Jenna's side.
Other people argued that Jenna was right, because the woman will have to wear the ring every day. “Dude doesn’t care about that ring. You have to wear this forever,” one person said, urging the viewer to say something.
“An engagement ring is not just a physical or material think, it is something representative of your love and commitment that you wear everyday,” another person pointed out. “Maybe the heirloom doesn’t even mean anything to Lance. I am with Jenna. Drop hints like crazy!”
