Jessica Simpson Accused of Throwing Shade at Britney Spears With Public Call-Out & Photo

Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears have a lot in common in their careers and looks. But still, Jessica was caught off guard recently when a fan awkwardly mistook her for Britney.

On Instagram, Jessica shared the details of the mix-up.

On October 14, Jessica shared on Instagram that she had been stopped by a fan who asked for her autograph.

That’s likely not super uncommon given Jessica has been around in the spotlight since she was a teenager.

But what was surprising is the person who asked for her autograph thought she was someone else.

“The face when someone in the parking lot at the mall asks you for your autograph, but expects you to sign it Britney Spears," Jessica wrote along with a photo of herself and her 11-year-old daughter, Maxwell Drew.

In the photo, Jessica and Maxwell are making exaggerated faces, as if they were shocked, playing into the caption.

It’s not super farfetched to think the two could be mistaken for each other.

Both Jessica and Britney are around the same age. Both have long blonde hair and rose to fame around the same time for their music.

It’s understandable that someone could have recognized her but wasn’t totally sure why and just mixed up the names.

Although Jessica and Maxwell seemed to play it off, the comment section went a little sideways.

“Were you dancing with knives or something?” one person asked, poking fun at a video Britney recently shared.

“At least they didn't say Christina Aguilera,” added another commenter.

“Were you spinning in circles?!?!” wrote someone else.

“Seriously, didn’t the clothing give it away?!” someone else wrote in jest.

People accused Jessica of throwing 'shade' at Britney.

“Is that shade?” one person flat-out asked.

“That's super disrespectful, Jessica.. you all should be supporting each other… She's been through a world of trauma.. she doesn't deserve this disrespect from you.. especially since you've been through so much, too,” one critic shared. “Women should support one another. You both are gorgeous and talented. Disappointing.”

“I’m honestly not here for this type of shade, & from one woman to another, I truly expected SO much better from you,” another person commented. “Terrible example you’re both setting AND encouraging.”

“I’m not sure how to take this post,” someone else admitted. “The two of you have always been compared, so I’m thinking this was a diss to her.”

'Was this necessary? She has her own problems,' shared another commenter.

“If you need to feel relevant again just say that but don’t compare yourself to an icon @britneyspears,” wrote someone else.

“These comments… SMFH. But I guess that’s the reaction Jessica wanted, hence why she posted it,” wrote another commenter. “It’s not cool to make fun of a woman, whose family ruined her life. I’d venture to guess she’s still a nicer human than @jessicasimpson.”

“Mean Girls Vibes tiskkk tiskkk. Stay classy , not trashy,” another critic wrote. “Putting other women down is NOTHING but trash! Then to teach your own child to do the same. WOW!”

It’s not clear if people are reading into this too much. It could just be a cute photo from Jessica and Maxwell, and people are reading it with shade. Or maybe it is shade.
