Joy-Anna Duggar Clears Up Long-Standing Rumor That She & Austin Broke a Major Courtship Rule Before Their Wedding

Joy-Anna Duggar has already admitted that she and husband Austin Forsyth didn’t follow all of parents Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar‘s courtship rules to the letter before they tied the knot in 2017. But there’s one rule she absolutely didn’t break, and now, she’s setting the record straight. The only problem? Some people don’t believe her!

Joy-Anna responded to a fan’s question about kissing.

During a Q&A on her Instagram Stories that was shared on a popular Duggar-related subreddit, Joy responded to a question asking if she and Austin stuck to her family’s rules about couples saving their first kiss for the altar – a rule fans have long suspected they didn’t follow.

But according to Joy, they totally did. “Yes ma’am, it was,” she confirmed to the fan who asked if her first kiss with Austin was at her wedding.

Some Duggar critics aren’t convinced she’s telling the truth.

Judging by the comments on Reddit, it seems plenty of people aren’t so sure Joy is giving us the whole story on this one.

“Isn’t lying a sin?” one person wrote. Another commented, “They want us to believe someone just suddenly, randomly asked that?”

Others were more shocked at just how young she looked on her wedding day.

Not only did she look younger (because obviously, it was almost eight years ago), but she was young: Joy was just 19 years old the day she and Austin got married.

“Except for the wedding dress, it looks like a high school prom photo,” one person commented.

Joy and Austin have broken other courtship rules.

It doesn’t seem to make sense that Joy would lie about this, because she and Austin have been honest about the rules that they did break before they walked down the aisle. During a February appearance on Jinger’s podcast, Austin admitted they skirted the rule about having a chaperone on all of their dates.

“We’d tell Justin to go sit in the truck,” he said. “I’d be like, ‘hey we’re going to talk. You go over there, Justin. You go in the next room or whatever.”
