On Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that he and wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau are going their separate ways after 18 years of marriage. And now, old cheating rumors from years ago are resurfacing as some try to figure out what went wrong behind closed doors.

The couple announced their split via Instagram.
Justin wrote that "after many meaningful and difficult conversations," he and Sophie had decided to go their separate ways.
"As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and continue to build," the statement said. "For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our and their privacy."
Now, old rumors are coming to light.
As the Daily Mail pointed out, in October 2014, Justin was asked if he or Sophie had ever cheated during an interview with the CBC. When he noted that marriages "have ups and downs," interviewer Evan Solomon asked him if that was "coded language for extramarital affairs," and he said it wasn't.
"This is a conversation about the kinds of challenges that any real marriage goes through. Tremendous ups and downs, but as I say we are deeply in love and committed to each other and we continue to be," he said.
In another interview a year later, Sophie seemed to dodge the question.
"Ask if whatever happened in our lives – I’m not saying it did or didn’t – as if we would answer that," Sophie said while talking to Global News, adding, "I’m almost kind of proud of the fact that we’ve had hardship, yes, because we want authenticity. We want truth. We want to grow closer as individuals through our lifetime and we’re both dreamers and we want to be together for as long as we can. I’m happy that we had to go through that."

Some believe Justin had an affair with Melanie Joly.
Over the years, there has been buzz that Justin cheated on Sophie with Canadian foreign press minister Melanie Joly, though those rumors have obviously never been confirmed. That doesn't mean people aren't taking the opportunity to bring them up again now, though, as we can see in the tweet.
There's no doubt this is a tough time for all of them.
Whether or not infidelity, a public split — especially after this many years of marriage — is always difficult. And of course, Justin and Sophie have their three children to think about, too. Navigating this next chapter in their lives won't be easy either way.
