What to Know
It’s clear from the cover of the book alone that Collin Gosselin‘s forthcoming memoir, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving My Childhood, isn’t going to paint his estranged mother, Kate Gosselin, in a positive light. And now that his big announcement has been made, Kate is speaking out, and it sounds like she’s already preparing to deny everything Collin writes about her in his book.
Collin announced his memoir on June 17.
Along with the announcement, he shared the powerful cover of his book: A paparazzi photo of Kate with her hand over the mouth of a very young Collin while the Jon & Kate Plus 8 family was out in public.
“Growing up, millions of people watched my life on television,” Collin wrote when he shared the news in an Instagram post. “People felt like they knew me. They knew my family. They watched me grow up. But there was so much they never saw. For years, I kept those experiences to myself. Some because I was afraid. Some because I didn’t think anyone would believe me. And some because I just wasn’t ready.”
It’s no secret that Collin and his mom no longer have a relationship. His dad, Jon Gosselin, eventually ended up having full custody of him (and his sister, Hannah) but not until after Kate had sent him to live at a residential treatment facility.
Kate has already gotten a lot of questions about the book on TikTok.

Even though Kate’s post was focused on updates about her rescue dog (as most of them have been recently) the commenters were filled with questions from people about how she feels about Collin’s book.
In one comment, someone asked Kate why she isn’t suing Collin for defamation if his claims against her are untrue, to which she replied (according to People), “I can’t bc I’m a public figure. Rules are different unfortunately. Or I def would!”
In another comment, Kate added, “The rules are different for ppl in the public eye. I consulted a high power LA attorney (you’ve definitely heard of him) years ago when other ppl were putting crazy stuff out there and that’s what he said. The courts don’t honor it if you’re in the public eye :(“
Collin doesn’t seem too worried about Kate’s claims, though.
During an appearance in a YouTube video shared by Strange McKnight earlier this week, Collin mentioned wanting Kate to take a lie detector test, and even seemed to accuse her of using zip ties as discipline with him as a child.
“However, speaking on the topic of zip ties, if I may add a thought, I know you’re probably going to ask about this, but I did just say on social media that I would like to invite my mom to do a lie detector test,” Collin said in the video. “And that would be one of the questions, mom, if you’re listening to this, we would ask about the zip ties.”
