Kate Middleton & Queen Camilla Have a ‘Tense’ Relationship as William Prepares for the Throne

Prince William is next in line for the throne, so it would be strange if he and wife Kate Middleton weren’t preparing for their reign. But apparently, King Charles’ wife Queen Camilla isn’t too happy about it, which could end up putting a decent-sized rift between her and Kate, the woman who will eventually take her place. After everything that’s happened with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, can the royals afford another feud?

Plans for William's succession are reportedly already underway.

A palace insider told Us Weekly that the Prince of Wales is already “preparing behind the scenes for when his ascension happens,” which means that he’s now being briefed on government and constitutional happenings. Making sure these plans were in place became even more important after 76-year-old King Charles was diagnosed with cancer.

“William and his team have agreed on what they will focus on at the start of his reign and funeral plans for his father,” the source said.

Charles may not be a fan of how quickly things are moving, though.

One of the sources told Us Weekly that after Charles has “wanted to be the monarch for decades,” he’s reportedly a bit jealous of how popular his son, the next king of England, already is.

Despite their close relationship, the two are “rivals when it comes to work.”

According to what a royal source told the outlet, Camilla is not ready to give up her place as queen any earlier than she has to.

“She loves her responsibilities,” they said. “Her whole life, she has always wanted to be queen, so she doesn’t want to let it go so fast.”

Knowing that she may not be queen as long as she hoped seems to be driving a wedge between Kate and Camilla.

“They’ve always had a tense relationship,” the insider added.

Royal expert Robert Hardman told the Us Weekly that if Charles should pass before Camilla does, she’s no longer be queen. Instead, she’d likely take on a different public role.

Meanwhile, the Prince and Princess of Wales are getting ready to rise to the occasion when the big day comes.

A third source told Us Weekly that the couple has spent “many years” preparing to eventually step into the roles of king and queen.

“They both feel comfortable stepping into greater roles — and [are confident] William can provide a modern way of ruling that everyone will see as a breath of fresh air,” the source added.
