Kate and her college friend Laura lived in St. Salvator’s Hall during their first year of college.
Kate Middleton attended the University of St. Andrews from 2001 to 2005. Kate first met Prince William in September 2001. Around the same time, Laura also met Kate and William in their dorm, St. Salvator’s Hall.
“I met Will and Kate the same week they met each other,” Laura wrote in an Instagram comment.
Later, Kate and Prince William moved into a shared house on Hope Street.
After living in the dorm during their first year of college, Kate and Prince William moved into an off-campus shared house with friends on Hope Street. The photo Laura shared on Instagram from their college days was taken at a Hope Street house party. In the photo, Kate wore a cream-colored turtleneck and Laura wore a black v-neck as they stood beside each other holding brownie bites.
“Sending love to Kate Middleton, the future Queen of England and my university dormmate! This was us at a Hope Street flat party,” Laura wrote.
Though she initially shared the photo in July, it just recently started getting attention online.

Kate's college friend described her as the 'most caring, down-to-earth, genuine person.'
Based on the Instagram post, Laura clearly has fond memories of the Princess of Wales. Describing her old friend, she wrote, “She is the kindest, most caring, down-to-earth, genuine person, and it’s incredible to see her shining so brightly and inspiring the world with her compassion and courage.
“I have the loveliest college memories with Kate,” she added.
Laura remembers meeting Kate for the very first time.
Thinking back to her college days, Laura remembers how Kate left a lasting impression the first time they met. “I remember the first time I met Kate, thinking, ‘Wow,’” she told People in 2011. “She just had a lovely way about her.”
She also described the Princess of Wales as “genuine” and modest. Though she was recognized as the “prettiest girl” in their dormitory during their first year of college, she didn’t act arrogant.
“She’s very grounded, and that sense of ease comes through in the way she carries herself and the way she just graciously walked up and accepted this award,” Laura told People. “She’s obviously stunning – but she doesn’t act in any way like, ‘Oh, I’m this gorgeous person.'”
They haven't really changed, Kate's college friend has said.
After college, Laura moved back to the US and didn’t stay in touch with Kate. Based on her interactions with the royals during their college years, however, she feels as though they haven’t changed much. “Kate was just genuine. And I don’t feel like she’ll ever change,” she previously told People.
“There was just such an innocence about it – I look at my pictures, and I can see the romance and the magic,” she told the magazine.
